As long as we're ranting, I don't stay signed into ATT, (my ISP), or FB anymore. I log in to check email, and log into FB to see what's going on, and log out when I leave.

Along with that, I changed my email password; lo and behold, I've received about 6 emails in my spam folder in the last month, total.

Common Core is really bad.

I know you don't like Glenn Beck, and I think he's a little out there also, but there's a youtube video of him discussing how common core is implementing data collection from the time kids are starting school. I'll try to find it if you want; it's creepy sh*t, and he gives the publicly available government documents that explain what they want to do.

PS- Bill Gates may want to save the world, but the world he envisions, is one with him and his cronies at the top, and in exchange, the rest of us get food, shelter, and an assigned job.

That's what common core is about. It's about full, (global), control by a handful of elitists, with the rest of us serving them in exchange for safety.

For now, they are ignoring the fact that China and Russia are not interested in a single global government. That could lead to problems later on, I would imagine.

I can't say for sure that it has anything to do with it, but it's one of several changes that I made, and I now receive almost zero email spam.

One thing that's immediately noticeable, is that if you use it to do a search on here, (in relation to a thread), you won't be blasted with related ads when you go to FB, or other sites.

We are in the midst of a true transformation, and despite the rhetoric, I don't think it will turn out well.

As far as I'm concerned, there is only one recipe for success...even on a global scale; and that is unfettered individual freedom.

Along with solid laws that punish those that seek to strip freedom/rights from others.

Under that scenario, our current administration is guilty of the taking away of our guaranteed rights, and they should be punished.

If we can't punish them in court, they should at least have the balls to admit that destroying our constitution is their goal.

While my earlier answer still has both validity and humor, I feel I should elaborate.

Google still has significant value as a search engine of the World Wide Web. Google never had value as an oracle but many misconstrued Google for one.

What Google cannot accurately do is to weight the merit, significance, usefulness, relevance or the many critical nuances that you, lyn, may have earlier found. The only thing that Google can do is weight cross references between sources and when an individual stops searching on a topic after following one of Google's links. When only the elite had access to the web this mantra worked well, a different paradigm existed in the caliber of both questions and answers a search engine had to deal with. [God! This atheist hates using the "p" word.]

The simple volume of people satisfied by a fifth grade level answer is not a testament against the information that Google can point toward. It is an acknowledgement that a fifth grade education outside of one's field is all that most need in life. This is what Google provides when the question asked is rudimentary.

Try using a "-" in your search, as in -ehow.com -ask.com.

I find that when I'm looking for places to buy a product, google inevitably gives me sites on patents for the product. Add "-patent" to the search and it gets much better.

Google is only as good as the person using it.

The Teapot Dome in Zillah, WA, USA was just a gas station, rather than a house. As far as I know, it still exists, with some kind of historical landmark status. There is now a freeway past it, so that one must drive the "old" highway to see it.

Boulder, CO, USA has a number of unique houses, including the one featured in the movie "Sleeper".

IIRC you can see that house on the way to Boulder (from Denver) but I'm sure it is fairly far from being in Boulder. I'm pretty sure there are closer towns too.

From what I've read recently, and from personal experience, Google dropped Boolean expressions. Put something in quotes- who cares? Add a plus or minus symbol? Go *(%^ yourself. That's what Google thinks. Apparently, Boolean expressions are "no longer necessary" for them to show you what they want you to see.

My argument against Google is this: it used to make it easy to find what I wanted to find. Now, if what I want to find didn't happen in the last month, isn't for sale, and is not on the top 500 searched for items... well, apparently I don't need to find it, because there's something else they would rather show me.

First thing you should do is to dump ASK PDQ.

I'm looking at duckduckgo.

ASK was selected for me, as was the totally useless E-how.

I like it. It's my default in Firefox, but I also have a pull down menu with google,Bing, yahoo, AVG.....

I don't miss doing a google search on here, and then finding related advertising on FB.

I think that Ask has taken over your browser. It can be difficult to get rid of.

Its your fault, not Google's. Its often "attached" to "free" software downloads....

I used to have the same annoying stuff happen. Got rid of Incredimail and some other free, fabulous programs. Uninstalled Google then reinstalled. All OK 'cept Google now gives me the choice of Twit Face and other social media sites as well as Chrome as a first option. It means an extra click.

I now use Firefox which has Google as its' searcher, all good.

Anytime I have been suckered into looking at an Ehow solution for fixing something, it has been at best vague, over-generalized, non-specific and at worst, outright wrong.

Most have never seen the items they are writing instruction for. (grammar check)

They NEVER give any specific instructions.

Interestingly enough, I have found the best source for repair tips on cars and such is YouTube. Some of it is dreck, but a lot of people have put real effort into producing decent quality video with genuine good tips on things the shop manual is deficient in showing.

Failing that, I take my tools to the local Pick-A-Part junkyard and practice on someone else's car before I break off that hidden, critical tab on the dashboard trim or door handles, A-pillar trim, or . . . .

Never have tried google, so I'm not going to miss it. While someone was using my system to download music, a toolbar called 'conduit' installed itself, and it took an hour to remove the pieces.

For narrowing searches I use the "+" sign like "copper+tubes" .... it works....

Since most of the public are less intelligent than a 3rd grader they are going in the right direction. If you think most of us are smarter (this group is excluded) see who we elect. Try driving in DC traffic. I do know metro DC drivers have been graded as the worst in the country so maybe the rest of the country population are at a 5th grade level.

I've never seen E-how, but occasionally Ask.com (which is very easy to avoid). I just did 3 searches, and neither one came up. I think you have a virus. But, if you want to try Microshaft's Bing, be my guest.

I do hate to say this but the corruption may not be a virus but a combination of Google's learning algorithm and your proffered Google search links here at CR4.

Ask can "link" itelf into most browsers and it is a pig to get rid of.....it then jumps into any search you make. It is absolute rubbish, but clever in how it attaches itself.....

Yeah, unfortunately my wife is prone to trying the 'latest and greatest' and she was duped into loading the Ask thing into her browser. I must have spent hours trying to dislodge that garbage without destroying all her other browser add-ons and settings.

I simply gave up and deleted Mozilla and re-installed it, that managed to finally get rid of it. Since then I am FAR more careful.......

You could say take screen shots of the pages of the add-ons, then delete the browser....

I had been using Ask.com for a few years. Then recently I found out they gave up the search engine business all together at least a year ago, and had been passing those search requests along to Google. Once I knew this I wanted to ditch Ask.com. immediately. I found out about startpage.com (by "searching"... how else??) and switched. Starpage also passes your search request on to Google and returns the result.

Google, like it or not, has the leading search engine. And ads will be here from now on just like GMO. Even if ads aren't part of your search results, the first link in those results you click on, is highly likely to have ad/commercial content. Try the word "freedom" on Google -- or other search engine -- and note any commercial links on your first page of results. Do we think an appearance of a commercial link is random? And "relevant" doesn't qualify as a rationale for a one-word search term. Interestingly, if you do the search on Google and try it on Startpage you get different results. Something isn't right about Startpage's claim to only be passing search requests on and sending back the results. It seems Google may be inserting a couple more commercial links, having identified the request as coming from Startpage, precisely to dissuade renegade searchers trying to escape Google. This would seem to negate the suggestion of using Startpage.

But privacy is still a concern and startpage uses Google's capabilities, while blocking your IP address and not saving your searches. (At least, that is their promotion.)

Also, the recent ruling about Net Neutrality, will, ultimately, make the Internet even more commercial than it already is, if that is possible. But the increase may be unnoticed by most. It's pretty saturated as it is.

To me, a lot of modern technology sucks. I try to minimize my use of it.

Hey, I just ran across this and thought it might be helpful in relation to this thread. Acedemia.research.microsoft.com looks promising so far, though I haven't had much time with it yet, and Microsoft does have a less than stellar record for being able to not suck.
