Risks Of Canned Motor Pumps With Molten Sulfur

Dear friends,

Our Client wants to change the existing Centrifugal pumps for molten sulfur service into canned motor pumps. The present Centrifugal pumps have a lot of problem with Mechanical seal.

If canned motor pumps is used for molten sulfur service , what all problems may be occured in future. My major concern is molten sulfur in motor.

Please provide your valuable suggestions.

I suggest that you find a new line of work.

If someone is paying you to select a pump and you have to go on-line and ask total strangers on an anonymous forum what to do you are cheating the poor client.

You should be ashamed of yourself and get a menial job with no responsibilities.

I believe that this is theoretically possible but the added operational control requirements will be much more complicated. Canned motor pumps are intended for material that is liquid at room temperature. Sulfur will get inside a canned motor pump. Sulfur melts at about 115°C. To prevent quick degradation of the bearings you may need a temperature interlock on the motor that turns the motor OFF if the sulfur soaked bearings get bellow 120°C. The stator motor windings must now have some very high temperture insulation because the winding resistance will just be adding more heat to these motors.

I don't see the practicality of a "canned motor pump" where the molten sulfur comes in contact with the windings. Depending on the pumping requirements I would think that a "sealless" pump would be a better bet See: http://www.springerpumps.com/blog/pump-sulphur-with-sealless-pumps-by-cp-pumpen/ where the use of a magnetic coupling eliminates the need for a coupling. Since no operating conditions were given it's hard to get too far in depth as far as a recommendation of other than a general nature. I do remember that it was a dog of a service back in the 60's-70's when I was doing refineries and chem plants.
