OMG......another breakthrough....I wonder how many more breakthroughs it will take until we see a product?....maybe there should be classes of breakthroughs, like 1-10....breakthrough class 9....something happened, but still no effect on you.....breakthrough class 1, a product using this tech will be in your hand by the time you finish reading this....

Space Elevator? I'm astounded that anyone is considering this technology. Surely it is fact that the potential difference between ground level and space-walking altitude is enormous. I remember 100V/metre (at ground level) as the typical potential, so how many volts up THERE!

I believe the atmosphere is acting as a giant capacitor, charged up by the Sun's continuous supply of 'charged particles'. I don't go with the Standard 'jostling ice crystal' theory. Since we have seen mega lightning in sync with low level lightning, we know they are linked discharges - stretching 10's of kms into the sky.

So try stretching your carbon fibres across that pd and "puff" - a big flash!
