Sizing The Coil Spring For Spring Shock Absorber

04/08/2014 9:23 PM

I'm designing shock absorber of steel spring for the aircraft, and once designed then it will be tested by abaqus. i wonder if anyone knows how to adjust the length or thicknes of coil spring, which will store let's say 10000N?

dannnnny,

A spring is not a shock absorber.

You should consider a simpler project, as you are hopelessly in over your head. By now, you should know this.

If you have actually designed anything yet, perhaps you could share some of your efforts with us.

yeah, understood it.

but there is spring shock absorber it rather stores energy not dissipates, but yeah anyway.

have only theoretical info not the actual design yet..

what kind of info could be informative for you to back up my question?

Why should anybody bother? What have YOU brought to the discussion? He asked a fair question, why not answer HIS question. And please, stop answering posts with the word "and". Bad grammar is just off putting.

and just telling you

i never studied about aircraft before for last years in uni, but as a challenge, I'm trying to look at the systems of aircraft cus I wanna jump into new field.

judging from your sacarstic badmouths and bilateral criticism, you never were brave enough to challenge yourself in my age:) I know your 20's was hopeless but you can't blame yourself on other people, if you what I mean? yeah you should as your english grammer is damn good;))

hopeless? well it should be just your own idea as you never challenged something new

Do bear in mind people come this kinda forum to ask questions not meeting such ramdom a hole like you.

You must be new around here. One takes their life in their own hands just by asking a question without donning their full body armour. There are a lot of very nice folks here, and just as many with overgrown egos. Tread lightly.

Please tell me which planes these are going to be fitted to so that I can take control of my personal "risk management" plans!!

Easy! Length adjustment can be made by cutting the spring to the desired length.

Thickness of spring should be considered when purchasing the spring and while at it (and due to design issues with spring ends) one could easily order springs with the correct length.

Last but not least length of a spring changes with compression or pulling force. But I think you know that.

What did you really want to know?

in my project

i replaced oleo shock absorber by steel spring shock absorber for the aircraft (I know it's not a good idea, but yeah)

wanted to know what dimensions of spring could be sustaining landing loads.

How big is the plane dude?

A steel spring is not a shock absorber. It is a spring. A shock absorber is a damper.

Are you putting the two together?

You did ask about adjusting the length and diameter.

So all you really need to know is how to select the spring?

You have the force and you have access to suppliers. All it needs is to order the correct spring.

But the issue seems to be that you want the spring as a shock absorber. You might want to invent this with a series of springs acting with and againsat each other.

This would be fairly new idea with the possibilty to fail.

It will take more than just knowing thickness and length!

Good luck!
