Permeance of Kraft Paper

04/11/2014 9:18 AM

Does anyone know where I could get a reasonable permeance value for ordinary kraft paper? I just mean the brown paper used to make grocery bags and such, rather than asphalt impregnated paper or plastic-sheathed paper facing for insulation.

I assume there's some variation depending on thickness and soforth, so a range would be acceptable, too.

Look for moisture vapor transmission rate of kraft paper.

I don't have time.

Not sure why you'd want this, since it'll be high.

Yes, the high rate of transmission makes it suitable for packaging things that you want to dry out, which I do.

I'm looking for a quantitative way to describe and compare this suitablility. Unfortunately, information that I find in general search results tends to be from the building industry, where what they often refer to as "kraft paper" is either asphalt-impregnated or has a plastic layer, which isn't directly applicable to my needs. So, I thought I'd see if somebody else knew a more direct route to the permeance of plain-jane kraft paper.

MVTR of Kraft paper is not a quality that would be considered as important as air porosity in a paper bag.

I doubt anybody will have tested it.

I'd contact some paper manufacturers and ask them.

I can tell you that double bagging for refrigerated and frozen foods is a good idea....but plastic is better...I personally use the canvass type....

Contact any cable manufacturer who makes paper insulated lead covered cables. The insulating papers are kraft and Brugg, Prysmian, NKT, Pirreli may help you.

I can tell you that insulation with kraft paper backing in 30 year old houses that I've renovated is eaten up by insects (roaches usually) and brittle as hell. So I'd call 30 years an upper limit.
