How to Make Demineralized Water for Super Heated Steam Boiler?

04/12/2014 7:48 AM
HOW TO MAKE DE-MINERALIZED WATER FOR SUPER HEATED STEAM BOILER?
We have 3 Russian steam turbines of which two are of 55 megawatts and another of 60 megawatts in our thermal power plant...and we have 3 turbo super heated steam boilers...so to run these turbines we need super heated steam...to produce this steam from super heated steam boiler...we need De-mineralized water of very high quality...currently our WCTP (WATER CHEMICAL TREATMENT PLANT) department produces not very low but medium quality of De-mineralized water for our boilers...resulting which produces medium quality of super heated steam...and so on this steam damage the boiler as well as turbine rotors.

it is to be noted that our WCTP department does not brings mineralized water from sea instead of having deep sea-side...it brings only common water for de-mineralizing, but cant do this correctly.

so what is the correct, convenient, easy and cheap method to produce super quality de-mineralized water for super heated steam boiler in order to run the steam turbines?

The American Boiler Manufacturers Association (ABMA) recommends feedwater and boiler water quality, according to operating pressure. What quality you need and how you obtain it depends on the boiler pressure and the chemical analysis of your raw water.

GENERAL TECHNICAL INFORMATION OF OUR BOILER

it is the Russian boiler plant type TIM-159/CO equipped with means of automatization of control , technological and signalization.

DESIGNATION & PARAMETERS OF BOILER

boiler plant TIM-159/CO with natural circulation is designed for producing high pressure steam burning natural gas, a mixture of blast-furnace, coke and natural gases, mixture of coal tar and blast-furnace gas.

boiler plant is designed for the following parameters :

production of super-heated steam:-
while burning blast furnace gas :- 135 t/h
while burning natural gas :- 220 t/h

temperature of super-heated steam :- 540 °C

pressure of super-heated steam at boiler outlet :- 100 ATM

feed-water temperature :-
while burning blast-furnace gas :- 202 °C
while burning natural gas :- 215 °C

description of boiler design :-
boiler plant has a ΤΤ-shaped lay-out and consists of combustion chamber (up-stream gas duct) and down-way convective shaft connected with transition gas duct.
in upper part of furnace and in turning gas duct a platen part of super-heater is arranged.
in down-way convective shaft arranged are (along the gas flow) the convective packets of super-heater and water economizer , behind the economizer a shot burner is located.
further more, the gases enters two rotating re-generative air heaters installed on separate carcass outside the boiler convective shaft.

GENERAL VIEW OF BOILER PLANT TIM-159/CO
-furnace chamber
-furnace bottom
-aerodynamic jet
-fuel oil burner
-burners of coke/blast furnace gas
-drum and separation devices
-ceiling super-heater
-water-walled reverse gas duct
-platens
-vertical super-heater
-inlet bank of convection super-heater
-horizontal De-super-heater
-outlet bank of convection super-heater
-water economizer
-re-generative air-heater.

Is these types of water treatment systems are suitable for our boiler which have the requirement of about 450 to 500 tons of de-mineralized water per hour...
we are very interested to buy and equip this type of plant in place of our WCTP department.
if u know this type of plant having the capacity of producing about 450 to 500 tons de-mineralized water per hour from raw water.
u can share your ideas and links to me.
will be very thankful to you
further information about our boiler has already mentioned.

Don't you re-use some of the condensate?

actually it is the largest metallurgical industrial complex which have many departments and they also have small boilers which also need de-mineralized water so most of our condensate goes to these departments, these departments does not re-send their condensate, and so on the remaining condensate that we re-use is of low quantity, thats why our WCTP department have to produce more de-mineralized water.

thats the reason why we are interested to buy and equip modern type of water treatment plant having capacity of producing 450-500 tons/hour of de-mineralized water because our WCTP department does not produces very high quality of de-mineralized water.
please note that our requirement of 450-500 tons does not remains same every time...some times this requirement may come to low depending on our usage.
if u know about these plants, u can share me your suggestions, ideas and links.

thank u...w8ing 4 ur reply...

Since your company apparently doesn't have the expertise in-house, here is my suggestion. Hire a knowledgeable, reputable consulting company to study your entire steam/condensate system (they should ask a lot of questions), and then make recommendations on how to solve the problem.

Turbine damage can be expensive.

Personal suggestion- coarse filtration, water softening, activated carbon sorption, nano filtration, multi pass RO followed by mixed bed DI polishing (worker-polisher rotating stages preferred for maximum efficiency). Of course, all these items must be spec'd and maintained properly to meet your requirements. Also you will likely run 700- 1,000 m3 of water per hour to meet your needs at this rate.

What are your WCTP procedures and protocols now, what do you define as medium quality water and what specs have the equipment manufacturers given as being a) minimum requirement, and b) desired level of purity?

You can't get something for nothing. You must be willing to invest time and MONEY in the production of quality DI water.

It sounds like the WCTP department personnel need to be retrained, or replaced. Or, maybe they are being forced to use old, worn-out junk for water treatment.

These terms don't go together well, "correct, convenient, easy and cheap".

You can't have correct water treatment that is cheap.

You can't have cheap water treatment that is correct.

Convenience and ease may come with the correct equipment, used by properly trained people, given the proper financing to perform the task at hand.

My guess is that the cheap component here is management who wants to squeeze every last penny of profit out of these boilers.

Use some of the excess heat or steam as it comes out of the turbines to distill water for water that is even purer than DeI water. This is distilled water, without any contaminants whether it be deionized or neutralized. You can't get any better than this water.

Good Luck, Old Salt

Contact a reputable supplier of bespoke water treatment systems with some indication of the feed water analysis and the product water specification, and the quantities required. A site visit will probably be neded to fully understand the need, and a technical/commercial proposal would follow some time afterwards.

One suggestion of a supplier will come in response to a query received via CR4's Personal Messaging system.
