Internal Design Pressure

04/12/2014 10:20 AM

For valve bolting calculation in ASME B16.34 we consider pressure as a class designation ( such as 150, 300, 600,900,1500 & 2500). In ASME section viii div.1 for valve joint bolting calculation can we consider the internal design pressure (P) same as class designation?

No....

ASME VIII clearly defines the design pressure. It is the maximum pressure that the system is expected to sustain at maximum pressure... plus a margin if desired.

You are aware the ASME B16.5/B16.34 pressure class designation IS NOT THE SAME as the maximum allowable pressure for the flange ?

A "Class 150" flange can, with the right combination of materials and temperatures, sustain much more than 150 psig.

You understand how this works........right ?

No, as there is no mention of temperature.

If design pressure is not given for valves can we consider 90% of maximum allowable working pressure as a design pressure?

"We" can do whatever "we" wants. However, it would be inadvisable to do anything without consideration of the temperature!
