Sealing Methods Of Joints in Engine Assembly

04/14/2014 3:24 AM

I have a query regarding the methods that are used in engine assembly to seal the joints which stops or avoids an oil or a coolant leakage from the joint. Some of the methods are putting up a gasket, or an O-ring, and in some cases a sealant is applied on the complete joint surface. My doubt is how do we decide which method to be used in engine assembly across what joints?

  1. Open the Maintenance Manual for the engine
  2. read what it says on the topic of interest
  3. apply a judgement on the validity of what is written before either
  4. following the procedure therein or
  5. deviating from it.

Please Sir please sir, can I write a sarcastic post about ignoring all the testing a manufacturer would do to choose, test and prove the method? Can I can I ? Eh eh?

The method to be used is determined by the type of joint to be sealed, and its design.

It takes many classes in alchemy, divination, and necromancy to master all the details. Hogwarts is the best place to go.

It's based on the weight of the engine.

Hi

Cost! Unfortunately cost rules most decisions there is usually a better more expensive way to do something.

I would look at what is required is there need for movement in the joint (ie. different materials ) what are you trying to contain (ie. pressure, liquid, gas)?? Then asses the consequence of failure and the risk of failure (how likely is it to happen). This will determine what methods you could apply and cost will rule the rest

First its important VERY IMPORTANT to be more specific. Type of engine and the specific joint to be sealed.

I run RMC, we service Electro-Motive diesels 900 - 5000 BHP and I will tell you without a doubt the easiest way for one of my men to loose their job is to use silicone....

Typically we use brush or spray adhesive to the block or major mounting component and simply apply standard grease to the other side of the gasket. If an O-Ring is used, we simply apply grease.

Problem with using liquid or some gummy junk is that it will eventually en up in the lubrication system and can cause catastrophic failure.

Regards

Tim
