Is Hurricane Alpha coming?

09/23/2005 1:08 PM

Expect to see Hurricane Alpha if we have five more of the giant storms this season. The plan is to go to the Greek alphabet if the 21 names already picked (ending with Wilma) are used up.

FYI, the tradition of using women's names for hurricanes goes back to WWII; the use of men's names started in 1979.

Name Retirement

09/23/2005 1:15 PM

When a hurricane casuses deaths or massive property damage, the name is officially retired. What happens if a Greek alphabet hurricane causes widespread devastation? Will it be retired? What happens the next time the Greek Alphabet has to be used? Will the letter just be skipped?

Look here for a list of retired hurricane names. No doubt Katrina will be added to this list.
