Gone Carting!

04/22/2014 7:29 PM

Here is one of my latest projects that involved repurposing some old junk into something useful. A go cart for my daughter!

It's mostly made of old 2" x 2" signposts, a old Honda Harmony riding mower 5 speed transaxle and a Craftsman Eager 1 push mower engine. first gear is about 2 MPH and top end is about 5 - 6 MPH.

Grandpa, Mom and daughter cruising the hay fields at 2 MPH.

About time everyone got off so I can open er' up and do some serious driving.

How rude. Grandpa did you just see that cat cut me off? Well here's some fingers for you to think about kitty.

I tell ya a girl gets her first car and everyone and their mouse starts bumming rides.

It must be another side because your picture doesn't look anything like your avatar.

Well my wife was not so thrilled with me last evening when I came rolling down from the shop about 8 PM with her gocart.

Daughter was thrilled though! She put in about 45 minutes of circling the driveway loop before mom pulled the plug because she was getting tired of walking along side with a white knuckled death grip on the seat back.

Today her opinion changed a bit being kido went to bed just after 9:30 last night and slept like she was dead until 9 this morning!

Well, I'm impressed. I guess you are more than just another pretty face.

I've heard than an inverted can of whipped cream will spray nitrous oxide into the carb inlet. Just in case she needs to chase down that darn cat. I'm just sayin....

Well the paint job is still being discussed.

If they don't pick one out soon its going to be IH red with IH white rims and bit of black accenting being that's what I have available in my shop.

BTW it has about two feet of 1/2" pipe for a exhaust system so it doe shave a bit of the hot rod bark to it. Or as much as a 4.5 HP lawn mower engine is capable of parking anyway!

It annoys mom and kiddo likes it so it's good enough by my standards.

What is the next mini project for her? A side car so she can chauffer you? A red light overhead so she can practice being a crime fighter? Paint it pink for the feminine side of her? A GPS? Fuel injectors? Supercharger? A siren so she can ride with the fire fighters? Or maybe just a very long rope on a winch so you can get her home for dinner?

Be proud of her!

Good Luck, Old Salt

I will put her on teaching her mother to drive the right way. That should keep her busy until she moves out someday.

Re: Gone Carting!

We need more posts like this. It would be great to see some similar projects from other members ( I find it very inspiring). My 2 young boys are now at the stage where they want to create things in the workshop ( I have been collecting old electric wheelchairs, engines etc. in anticipation of this moment ).

Any one who is on Facebook can check out my Offbeat Engineering page where I will be regularly posting their creations (and some of mine too!!).

My boys and their friends spend a lot of time in the workshop, I look out for their safety but try not to inhibit their imagination.

So come on lets see some of your projects, past or present.

Thanks Dell.

They are obsessed with making things to hurl projectiles, so expect to see their own version of a BAE systems rail gun coming soon. Lets hope they put all this to good peaceful use!!

Not sure whether to be more intimidated by the bow or your expression!!

A couple of weeks back we had a cross-border excursion, took the boys to The National Armoury in Leeds, plenty of bows-n-arras there.

But seriously, your creations are superb, a true craftsman indeed.

Just visited your page.

Nice welding. Nice engineering. Nice tinkering, in the classic sense.

I envy both all three all of you artist/craftsmen.

Del's work is classic.

Thanks lyn, it's more of a lifestyle kind of business, it pays the bills but only just.

I would like my kids to grow up with loads of practical skills and enthusiasm for creating things. Even if in the long run they don't use them at least they will hopefully have a healthy respect for those who do.

They are at that age where they are buzzing with ideas, if we can work together and realise some them, I could think of nothing more satisfying.

As mentioned above, I have amassed a collection of old electric wheel chairs for the boys to use on projects.

However they have been lying around for so long now that the batteries are all completely dead, most of them will not accept a charge ( using a bog standard charger), is there any technique to recover them or are they simply knackered.

It's my own stupid fault, I should have removed them and kept the charge topped up.

I had heard, but never tried, that you can bring a NiCad battery back to life by zapping it with a welder.

While looking for that, I found the other two wet cell suggestions below.

Mind you, I've never tried any of these myself, but I imagine you will get other "can't miss" suggestions from some members here, as well.

Thanks lyn, will investigate these links soon as I get the chores done.

I have tried the welder trick before using a DC welder ( current source ) but cannot remember what the outcome was.

It's the basic design I came up with when I was about 10 and wanted a go cart but lacked the knowledge and materials to construct it so it's taken about 30 years to go from the drawing board to being a workable cart. .

Kinda thinking of making a close replica to this about twice this size for me but with full front and rear suspension being I have a large garden tractor transaxle that is not serving a purpose any more.

Bad news. The governor on the engine pooped out tonight.

Good news is apparently you can't over rev a Tecumseh made product to the point of self destruction!

I'm guessing the engine has a plastic governor assy and after near 20 years of sitting the plastic rotted out and fell apart after a few good hours of use.

As long as you are going to be working on that engine, I have heard that the old emission air pumps from the late 60s, 70s and 80s can be used as a blower on those small engines.

As for te larger version for you, there is a class of cars called Legend cars. They are 7/8 scale versions of cars like 37 Chevys. A well used one would make a nice toy for you to enjoy with the existing cart. They use 4 cylinder motorcycle engines in them. Built tough for the young racers just getting into cars.
