1998 Jeep Cherokee Electrical Problems

05/12/2014 9:55 PM

I have a 1998 jeep Cherokee, 4.0, v6 that is having some issues with headlights, light clusters, gas meter and odometer. I checked all the connections and grounds and found nothing that was abnormal. I also used a power pen to see if either was receiving power and came up negative on all. I know there is no relay for the lights and all fuses are in good standing so now I am at a lose as to where to go now. Any good directions from the pros?

Why don't you start by defining "issues".

You give nothing useful, except the connections seem OK, when you tested them.

When you have issues are you driving? Daytime? Dark?

Give us some hints.

The problem is always there, never changes. Just woke up one morning and bam this is what I had. No headlights. While investigating the headlights I noticed the instanent panel wast working properly either. I have turn signals and parking lights. The headlights have went out before and I replaced the switch and problem fixed but this time wasnt the case.

I said the connection was negative, meaning no power. I have no power to the switch for the headlights and no power going to the light clusters except the annoying beeping noise you get when you leave your lights on. Other than than no other power to the odometer, gas gauge or any other lights in that vacenity

OK, then we need to find/trace the power back from the switch.

Find a schematic, go to a Jeep forum.

Someone else may have more information than I do.

You need a good multimeter to check continuity to ground and power supply to each gauge....These jeeps are notorious for wiring problems...It's not an easy job and takes the patience of a saint....Just take it one at a time...The wires may be broken(not getting power), the grounds not well connected, or the gauge may be bad.....there is no easy fix, unless you get lucky and find it yourself....

As stated above, check carefully the wires, there must be a break along the lines.usually cause by rodents (especially small rats.)or clogged water that did not drain, causing short cct.Alternatively replace the set of wire for that circuit,

I am not familiar with your vehicle but on modern vehicles starting about 1988 or so the manufacturers started using one wire to power many functions or accessories. This was done by sending a frequency down the power wire and that particular signal was received by a device that only responded to that particular signal. For this reason one wire for instance could power your variable speed wipers, heater fan possibly more.

This method of control is very common today in cars and even construction or industrial engines. (Volvo) It will be difficult to diagnose but getting the schematics for your vehicle would be in my opinion a mandatory start.

If you like risk then changing components from a working donor vehicle such as a salvage yard may be an economical solution. I assume you have checked all fused circuits.

Go back and check your battery... You may have forgotten to turn those headlights off and continuously draining power, now you end up with a dead battery! Be sure the battery is fully charge.. and your power pen should be alive or positive not negative unless its bulb is also burnt! Use a DC voltmeter instead of the power pen!

I have an 03 Cherokee that has an intermittent "no start" condition, along with a few other strange issues.

There is a fuse box next to the battery. There should be 5 separate heavy fuses that bring power into the interior. Each of these feeds a separate wire that runs to the second fuse box inside the car. It is located above where the clutch pedal would be. Check to see that all five of these are live at first the outside fuse, and then at the inside wire connector. These wires will be 10 Ga. and I seem to remember that more than one of them was red, although there are other colors as well. Good luck. Do Not Buy Anything From Lyn-Door Industries.

John4370, This thread is old, and many regulars delete threads when the go idle. If you want more suggertions, try opening a new thread/ question.

To try to help you, identidy what items are on the fuse with the 2 A drain. Radio memery, clock, glove box light, trunk light, under hood light, console light, cigar lighter (if equipped) are all common causes.

Computer memories relays, are also possible, but , not as common.

Good luck, and welcome to the site.
