HHR Radio Issue

05/14/2014 8:23 AM

Got a 2008 HHR with a unique issue regarding the radio. Lately ( last 3 weeks) I start the vehicle but my radio while displaying correctly has lost it's station. I try turning it off and on and running the seek functions and after about 5-8 minutes the stations pop back on. Interesting side note, FM stations have static noise while AM are fairly quiet, contrary to expected. checked memory fuse and antenna connections nothing obvious. Anybody out there come across this anomaly?

Are there any dry-joints on its circuit boards? Broken circuit board tracks? Loose plug-and-socket connections between boards?

What is the prospect of obtaining a replacement from a secondhand store, charity shop or internet auction sites?

Best guess the antennae is defective....the intermittent nature of the occurrence, would seem to confirm a bad connection or possibly some sort of static charge buildup....did find these...

"The radio "pop" problem is addressed in TSB #06-08-44-007C, Radio distortion and Pop Noise

The audio quality/poor reception on FM band is addressed in TSB #06-08-44-016 or TSB#06-08-44-016B (updated)"

That does sound like a classic antenna problem, somewhat.

Typically, the AM will lose reception before FM, but the lack of AM noise is also a symptom of poor receiver gain or faulty antenna.

If you slap the side of the dash near the radio does it change reception?

It could still be an internal fault, but I suspect the antenna or its cable is the first place to look. A dealer can do that pretty quickly.

We used to use a 31" stainless steel whip FM antenna and connect it into the back of the radio while holding the base against something metal on the car. If the reception improved over the stock antenna it was time for a new antenna.

I had the booster/amp in the base of the antenna short out. You can test this by taking the 8 screws out the sun visors then pull down on the front of head liner. Stick a block of wood in there and unhook the power wire connector to the antenna. FM will work and AM will stink.
