Experience with Skype

06/20/2007 2:52 PM

I recently obtained a Dummies book about Skype from the library. It looked interesting, and is supposed to be free. I went online to download the "free software" and it appears that there is now a charge to utilize the Skype service.

I am wondering whether any of the you CR4 people have experiences (good or bad) which you would share relative to Skype.

Thanks.

I travel all over the world for about 120+ days per year. I started using skype 3 months ago. The way it works, is you make phone calls through the internet using your computer. I am using my bluetooth headset (the same one for my cell phone). I can still play music on the speakers, my computer rings when a call comes in and I answer it. Here is what I have found: Skype software is free. A call from a skype user to/from anouther skype user is free, no matter how long you talk. Regardless of where I am at you can't tell that the call is over the internet. Calls to and 800 number landline are free. I purchased skype outbound for $30 per year and with it I can call any landline in North America at no additional cost. When I am in the USA, there doesn't appear to be any issues with call clarity or delays, yet. When I call from outside the usa to a landline, I have to pay about $0.02 per minute. Far cheaper than my other options. My calls from Korea and Hong Kong are clear with no delays. My calls from Beijing have had long delays in the call. I also use skype to call my oversea customers. Cost is about $0.02 per minute. Overall, I am impressed with the service. Grayson

I've been using Skype for almost a year now and its great!

For 6 months in the UK all Skype calls were free to any UK telephone, so it beats paying for my telephone calls...

Now the 6 months offer is over its still the cheapest way to phone people worldwide, free if they use Skype, but still very cheap if you phone a normal landline.

The only thing Ireally like is that you can sit with a headset on so leaving your hands free to scribble. Although this can be a bit disconcerting as you're never sure how loud you are speaking to the other person!!

The problems with using Skype, are mainly that you need a computer turned on, so a quick phone call is easier to make with a landline phone... Also echos and delays are a problem, as are dropped calls and the occasional unrecognised phone number...

John.

I have been using Skype for about five months now. My coworker and myself use it to conference call with our customer in Taiwan. So far so good. Had an issue with echo in the beginning (that was our fault... headphones resolved that problem). Video conferencing works pretty good. Saves the money of an actual phone call, and from what I hear... "real" conferencing hardware can get quite expensive. I'd recommend it.

I have been on skype for a couple of years. I talk free peer to peer. I travel the world and use skype to call the office, customers and home for 0.025 cents per minute on average. I have used it In Russia, Poland, Israel, Middle East, Mexico, Brazil etc.

I also use it for calling customers who are on skype. It has helped my business tremendously.

I highly recommend it.

Skype is free so long you call up a person on his/her computer also having skype. But if you call up a land line or cell number you have to buy skype credits - the minimum is US$ 10. But the call charges are very low compared to any other service, also the quality of the calls are as good as land line to land line and better than any other VOIP service I have used so far.
