Acid Resistant Materials

06/22/2007 3:40 AM

does any one know the material that is resistant to weak sulphuric acid beside lead and cast iron?

Further, wherever suplhuric acid is diluted, expect a measure of heat to be generated. At these spots, care is needed in the correct selection of materials. Polyvinylidene_difluoride (PVDF) is a material to be considered at these spots. It attracts a high value in comparison to other plastics.

One can use glass or glass lined vessels where temperatures of mixing remain high. Teflon lined vessels and CPVC piping can be used depending on the temperature of the dil. acid.

Most plastic materials are resistant to cold weak sulphuric acid.

For example, polyethylene and polypropylene should be usefull up to 50°C(122°F),maybe 60°C(140°F).
Specialized laboratories use teflon,up to 250°C(482°F),but teflon vessels are very expensive.
Compatibilities of common material should be presented in the catalogues of plasticware for laboratories and hospital(if such companies as Kartell and Nalgene still exist).
Apart from this and usual glassware, industry uses enameled iron, which is very resistant to acids, even concentrated, except hydrofluoric which converts silicates into silicon fluoride and hydrolyses it.

There should exist other suitable materials, but polymers, enameled iron and glass are the most usual and practical.

Check with Dupont for baked fluoropolymer coatings such as halar or other derivatives

There are also some blended epoxies that are resistant in an immersion application

Some also use ceramic linings

I worked in many lead-acid battery manufacturing plants for a few years. Polypropylene was used extensively, even to make all the components of conveyors and tables (sides, supports, beds, bolts, nuts, etc.) with hot gluing tools to melt the joints together. Do NOT use nylon or similar materials, because it dissolves in acids. The typical electrical wires with nylon jacketed PVC insulation became unusable syrup in hours.

Hope this helps--JMM

I find it interesting that no one pointed out that lead and cast iron are not particularly resistant to weak sulfuric acid. Glass, and the plastics mentioned would be good choices. as far as metals go ( if one needs a conductor ) I think gold and platinum would be good choices, perhaps some forms of stainless steel would be fairly good for weak sulfuric acid.
