How to ship glass in bulk after coating

06/22/2007 4:14 PM

Hi

I am looking for info on shipping glass that has been coated. - this will be a bulk shipment. The challenge is to ship it with out damage to the glass or coating.

Thank you.

What is the shape and size? Any embossed pattern before of after coating? Is the coating sensitive or fragile? Distance and method of transport?

Presumed that it is coating on sheets of glass an that the coating should be protected.

Tissue or other paper between sheets, or corrugated cardboard for uneven surfaces.

If you are not shipping massive sheets but less than 2' x2' glass, the most economical way is to have styrofoam blocks made up with groves cut in that woul entrap the glass sheets at the corners. Imagine, say 3"x3" x12" blocks with cuts in it the thickness of the glass and spread apart enough to prevent the glass sheets from touching. Fit that finished block EXACTLY into a box of that size. Be sure it is marked that the glass is allways on end and not allowed to stand flat. It will deflect!!!

Thank you for your comments.

The Glass is a little larger than the 2'x2'.

The coating is pretty robust when fully cured - but I have to plan for when it may not cure fully.

Also, the solution needs to be reuseable - or recycleable.

Here in the UK, Piliington Glass and its associates throughout Europe us special truck trailers which can carry very larg - probably 12 metre X 6 metre sheets in a special semitrailer which holds them upright in a frame and the trailer consists of a fork shaped rig with each wheel set passing either side of the frame which is then jacked up a littel to allow for ground clearance.

One can see these distinctive trailers being towed throughout Europe transferring bulk glass from plant to plant.

Hope this helps

Glass racks are available that hold the glass separated. Each rack holds 60 pieces made to be moved with fork truck. Glass sets in grooves cut in UHMW block. Holds about 1/2 " separation between glass. Glass is retained with clip on a cord. Clip pulled tight into cord grip.
