Baldingbarry: You don't! Asia is huge and many places have similar voltages but not the same style plug. Best bet is to go to 'The Source' formally 'Radio Shack' and buy a universal adaptor. If it is only one specific contry you plan to visit, call their local Consulate and ask. If you can't find the listing, go to a pay phone and use directory assistance, free, from there. More than likely if it is or was British influenced, it would be the same as UK. 220-230 VAC 1Ph two pin round.

Hi baldingbarry,

A good place to start is this link to the Wikipedia article on Mains Power Systems. It lists what voltage and connectors are most common in most of the worlds countries.

Go to your local AAA (American Automobile Association) office. They deal with travel all over the world and probably have the adapters you need.

http://users.pandora.be/worldstandards/electricity.htm was recommended a few days back in CR4. It is quite good. You can try it.

First check your iPod charger and see if its 100-220VAC.

You may not need an adaptor.

FIRST!! Check the power supply for your Ipod. See if it will operate from approximately 90 volts through 240 volts... and 50-60 Hz. If it will operate over that voltage range, you are HALF WAY THERE.

If it only operates on 120 volts, then youwill have to get a step down transformer to drop the wall voltage from 240 volts down to 120 volts.

This handles the electrical part of the problem. Now we get to the mechanical end.

There are many different mechanical standards for wall sockets, most of which will NOT accept American plugs You need adapters for whatever countries you are traveling to. You may also need a U.S. 3 wire to 2 wire adapter (with the ground wire cut off) such as you can find in many hardware stores. Adapters for offshore might not accept a three prong American plug, and it is easier to use a 3->2 adapter than to ruin your power cord by cutting off your ground pin.

When we took a laptop and printer to Europe, we would (when needing to print) disconnect the laptop from the wall and run it from batteries with the printer plugged in the outlet. European outlets are not duplex (double) such as they are in the US.

I am about to go through this exercise again as we are taking 100 teenage musicians on a performing tour of China for two weeks.

For adapters, I would say Radio Shack, Office Max, Staples or other business supply places. You may have to hunt for the 240 to 120 volt transformer (if you need it), but ask at these same places. Adapters come as sets, typically on a bubble pack card with the adapters labeled for the particular country you need.

Sincerely

Bill
