Reverse/Back Up Sensors For Cars/Light Trucks

06/25/2007 10:59 AM

I am looking for a robust solution to provide reverse or backup sensors that typically mount in the through holes of the back bumper on various vehicles. (The typical round plug style. Ideally the sensors will mount integrally on the inside of the bumper, and require no painting, etc....

The sensing technology will have to be cost effective for mass production/appliation, and be able withstand adverse outdoor elements. These could be accoustical, infrared, microwave, etc...

This has been designed, produced and then mass produced for cars etc...

Originally it was for Polaroid cameras for range finding back in the 70s...

It uses ultrasound, about 40kHz, to give range finding... Nothing new about it, you can buy a simple kit to install on your own car.

Hi Electroman,

Can you buy from the likes of Halfords for fitting by the DIY enthusiast?

Thanks for the feedback. I understand the origin and basic technology, but am specifically interested in a sensor that can send/receive through the bumper fascia material i.e. plastic, etc... thus eliminating the need to bore/punch holes in the bumper to facilitate mounting the sensors as it is currently done....the sensor "plugs" are inserted into the holes flush with the outer surface of the bumper skin....

There are some good kits (to allow you to install yourself) with LCD display and 4 sensors from about 45 Euros and up......you do not need to invent it yourself!

I forgot to mention, there is a version of this park sensor that works like an antenna, a silver foil must be stuck inside the plastic bumper, at least 40 cm above the ground if I remember correctly. Therefore you do not need to bore holes!!!
