Looking for New Security Solutions

06/26/2007 9:35 AM

No matter how carefully you protect your business data from prying eyes, every day you hear about companies that have been victims of hackers and other pernicious personalities. Passwords — however strict your implementation guidelines — can never provide adequate protection against a person sufficiently determined to get past them. This article from Network World presents a number of alternatives ranging from additional identification questions to fingerprints and other physical identification that can give you additional piece of mind.

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Engineering Management, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Engineering Management today.

Just went thru an episode of this, and although the damage was minimal, it sure provided the needed impetus to get everyone thinking about how best to secure our data. Most folks are too complacent when it comes to security and think those of us who aren't are paranoid, but when the life of your company depends on data security it's best to be just a little paranoid. As with most hacker attacks this was an 'inside job', which given the severity of the outcome, has probably damaged the persons career if not their life for some time to come. One thing that companies/people should pay attention to is the wide range of devices that can be brought thru the door and used to download data, stick drives, zip drives, iPods, CD, DVD recorders, etc.

A implanted RFID tag that uses the DNA of the person as a password might work.

Security is a relative term.

Like the "perfect" insulator, there is always a voltage that can exceed it.

A certain level of security is possible, but not an absolute one, even when Quantum

Computers become common.

I have nothing to hide, no nefarious agenda of any sort, but I believe that everybody's business is nobody's business.

I know that the speakers on your computer can be used as microphones and transmit everything in the room.Same for your telephone, even if it is hung up.

Inserting a blank mike plug into your computer mike input can help defeat some eavesdropping, likewise in the external speaker outputs.

The only truly secure way to transfer a message from one person to the other is in person, using a one-time cipher that sends the user to another one time cipher, for several hops.

Of course then you have the human uncertainty principle, and possible surveillance of the messenger.
