Fast Growing Greenery

06/06/2014 12:43 PM

Hi,

I am looking for some suggestions and inputs on fast growing plants or, plants that become trees fast. I have this land, about 2 Acres (~8,000m^2) that I want to convert into a place where I can enjoy the greenery and laze around. Point is that I wish to enjoy the shade in my life itself, God willing, for some years of my active life. NO, NO, I am not retiring but only looking at fulfilling a desire that I have.

The issue is, this land, which actually is 4 Acres, has got about 80% fertile red soil and remaining is black soil - something like clay - and that happens to occupy 40% of the land that I wish to develop. It also happens to be on the lower gradient which I plan to make over by pulling the red soil over it (almost a meter at the extreme) from the other parts of the land.

So, I am now open for your suggestions and advises on plants that grow in to comfortable trees (big plants) in say, next five (5) years.

BTW, I am already talking to some local experts here, but in CR4, I am making an effort to explore some ideas on exotic varieties and expert opinions.

Thanks

Thanks. "Royal Empress" has been thought of. Hopefully, will be able to source it. Teak plantation in other parts of the land is already done.

I had an Acacia which grew 3mtrs in one year. Now there are many types of Acacia, and I have no clue which genus I planted (it didn't have thorns, although many do). Foliage was luxurious and soft.

I was going to suggest the Paulownia tomentosa tree too. From what I understand, President Jimmy Carter has about a stand of these trees that he was making furniture with. They are some beautiful trees.

The faster growing the tree, the softer the wood....which means the branches of fast growing trees are subject to catastrophic failure when subjected to high winds or snow loading.....so I might suggest a mixture of indigenous species that grow well, but slowly, and faster growing species....Your local nursery will know what plants do best in your area, and what soil amendments are required...

Thanks SE. There is no snow loading at all but Yes! it is definitely windy at times. I too was thinking in terms of a mixture of species. Thanks again for the caution.

Plant Hybrid Poplar trees.

They are nice shade trees, and grow up to 10 feet per year.

They can be harvested for furniture production as the wood grain is beautiful.

For Indian conditions I suggest you should grow Mango trees, it will give you greenery and fruits in the season. There is nice variety which is grown in Hyderabad. It may not be fast growing tree and if you are not retired then you can enjoy the shade in your old age. Make hammock and have nice afternoon siesta. Also your children will at least enjoy the mango's and remember you..

Sharma Ji,

I already have about 15 mango trees as of now of Bainganpally, Rasalu, Himayati, Totapari etc., and aiming for Ratnagiri and Haapus varieties.

They plucked the fruits a few days back and have kept them under dry grass and just today, I was given the sample of this year. Yes, I do sit under these trees and have a time of my own.

But, the idea here is, to fill up that vacant place with few fast growing trees.

Good to hear you are already enjoying variety of mangos. I am from Mumbai, we had good supply of Alphonso, very cheap @ Rs.300/- dozen, but being diabetic I could not have fun of eating them. Now you can fill in empty space with ornamental variety of trees.Make Hammock and enjoy afternoons under trees.

Is not Alphonso similar to Ratnagiri? Both, I believe, is a produce of Western ghats i.e., between Mumbai and Goa.

As far as 'afternoon siestas', 'Hammock', 'under the tree' etc., are considered, I still am not able to take time out for these. But when I am done, I'll invite you over for company and probably also add a table with beer on it.

Normal size, (not dwarf version) fruit bearing trees are something you can consider. It will provide the shades you'll looking for plus some fruits to munch when they mature! Normal growth height to about 20 to 30 feet with 5 -7 years depending on soil and moisture conditions..

The best fast-growing shrub/tree will depend on your planting zone. Talk to the folks in a couple landscaping nurseries near you. They'll give you some suggestions.

Where I live in the hot, humid, Southeastern US, the soil is heavy red clay. Here, the two most popular are the Leyland Cypress and the Green Giant Arborvitae. They look similar and are both very fast growing, providing decent screening within just a few years.

Here are some links to google images for both types.

In Western Australia the Leyland Cypress has a fungus problem. I see that it is also a problem in other countries.

While on problems. I see Poplar has been mentioned with a lot of its' good points but no mention of its' suckering habit.

This question is from a while ago. I would be interested to hear from the OP about his garden project.

Hemp is also known as cannabis. I will keep away from it.

Hemp is becoming one of Canada's fastest growing farm products, the seed is used for oil, the fiber for cloth, and the waste for heat. Even before Colorado leagalized the medical and recreational use, I could buy 'hempseed' by the pound at my local health food store....I use it to make a non-dairy 'milk'...very healthy. I wonder what India's policies are.

Kudzu. It grows about 1 foot per day. Warning: Entire towns in the southern US have disappeared under the Kudzu vines.

Does the Indian variety grow more slowly than what we have in Georgia, USA? I plowed 5 acres under and in 2 years you couldn't tell.

You could add bind weed to that. It climbs up anything in its wake and provides pretty flowers. It will grow ANYWHERE. You could have mine!!! REALLY!!!

For a tall tree with the first braches well off the ground a Lemon Scented Gum is good. A chistmass tree shape can be had from a She Oak. Both are drought hardy once established as they are Australian natives.

No! They definitely are not. We get 600 - 800mm rain per year and go for months at a time with no rain.

India is well known for it's forest growth. Your local nursery would be a better source of knowledge on both your soil conditions and climate, as well as indigenous types of trees (always better to plant) to advise you..

Without knowing your location or climate, I would suggest going with Afghan pines, these grow reasonably quickly, are sturdy, and make a good looking pine tree. You would have to remove lower branches if you don't want the "Christmas tree look".

Other than that other posters have you covered.

Kapok trees and various strains of bamboo would be among top choices.

.

Kapok trees have beautiful flowers, a very unique look with spikes on the trunks and grow very rapidly.

.

For novices, most people will try to steer you towards clumping strains of bamboo. Running strains of bamboo will grow much faster and cover more area more quickly and offer a wider range of climates in which they will thrive. They do require a subterrainian barrier to be contained, but most runners can be contained with as little as 18 inch deep plastic liner. All the timber bamboo varieties are runners.

There has to be a way to download and save your suggestions.

I did copy paste in word but is there any other way?
