Year end project - Electromechanical Engineering

06/29/2007 7:28 AM

I am finishing my degree on electromechanical engineering degree. I am having problems to choose a subject for the project.

I am an Instrument technician right now in the oil & gas field. I like automation and controls. I would like to do something related to the area where i work.

Can anybody help to choose a subject for the year end final project?

I appreciate you help.

Regards

A electronic alarm to detect (dangerous) levels of leaked gas. If it already exist try and improve it.

How about a down hole GPS sensor to tell you the depth and position of the drill?

Gas coming out of producing oil wells has to be flared if not produced. If the flare pilot flame goes out, the flow of gas has to be stopped. Typical thermocouplings are very slow reacting during cool down. Gas is allowed to flow during this period. Electronic controls are fast, but require a continuous wattage draw. Since electrical energy is supplied by batteries charged by solar panels, and sometime wind mills; the electrical draw is accepted, but if there were another non-electrical method of achieving quick response, that would be preferred. There is a bi-metal material that will withstand the temperature, and there are no-friction control valve that could be connected to the bi-metal that would provide a solution.

Why not remove this problem by designing some usefull way of utilising the gas?

In flare system, the flare tip sometimes smokes, which indicates a bad process and a lot of pollution, there is a sensor like a zoom monitor which sense and transmit a signal to the control room, which indicate the event. At the same time it sends a signal to a steam control valve to supply more steam to overcome the smoke.

All the ideas I have read so far are very valuable.

Just a reminder that I need to choose a subject that I can find credible information on. The subject have to be problematic and interesting for the ones that do not understand the oil industry.

I am waiting for more feedback on that, and also ways to get some info, besides the workplace.

Regards
