Procurement is one of the jobs where you can accumulate knowledge, experience and contacts for free.
My advice to you is to stay where you are for the present and spend additional effort to become the best procurement engineer there is. Your aim must be to find new products and evaluate and classify all products. The suppliers will flood you with products and info if they find out you are intrested.
Very soon you will be able to suggest and motivate alternatives solutions.
The superiors will notice you soon enough and give you more responsibilities.
If they don't then you can start applying for suitable engineering jobs (even at suppliers). with all the experience you have gained it should be plain sailing.
note: If you look at some of the questions you will notice people are sometimes looking for products that already exist. Why? - because the are not trained in procurement.

hi, hussain. like you, i am also a mechanical engineer. 80% of my job is in procurement (or purchasing) while the remaining 20% is in maintainance planning and scheduling. you might think that our job is not challenging enough but there are so many things to consider that would make our job worth keeping. first, procurement is a science. you must schedule your procurements and keep track of it so that it would arrive before they are needed. you must always be on the look out for every discrepancy in your inventory and keep it at a manageable level. you must also be knowledgeable on the items you are procuring so the you obtain the alternatives with the best price, quality, and lead time. your procurement activities are also governed by a budget. it takes a person with a keen analysis to see the disparities of his day to day dealings and make the necessary actions to stabilize his spending. and last but not least, you are able to deal with a lot of influential people from world renowned companies that could someday help you if someday you might need a new job. as for the moment, enjoy your current job and challenge yourself.
