Is it Possible to Transmit Bulk Amount of Power Through Wireless System?

07/28/2014 2:07 PM

We know about generation, transmission and distribution system dealing with electrical energy. But if we be able to transmit electrical energy through a wireless system, the reliability of this system may be far more better. For transmitting signals we use Microwave Technology for the wireless power transmission. But is it applicable to transmit bulk amount of power i.e for our domestic purpose and industrial purpose through wireless network?

Please reply.

"... transmit electrical energy through a wireless system ..."

Not 'electrical energy' (in the utility-grid sense of the word), but energy in the form of electromagnetic waves, yes. Whether it is practical or advisable from lots of standpoints is another matter but, yes, it is possible.

Every so often the idea crops up of constructing vast solar arrays in space and beaming the energy to Earth via microwave, but it has never materialised for a variety of reasons.

Thanks for your reply. Yes we can transmit electromagnetic wave through wireless system. But is there any technology to convert electrical energy into electromagnetic wave or vice versa ? Please reply.

By Jove! Yes there is! Anything from an Edison lamp to a radio transceiver to a microwave oven do just that very thing! Isn't it amazing?

Yes. It's amazing. We know electric signal is converted in Radio Frequency signal. But how it can be utilized as the transmission of bulk amount of power which can be used in our daily life directly?? It it can utilize, just think there will be much less transmission loss and much less earth fault in system.

What sort of transmit and receive power figures are you on about? For what purpose is this power? What is the source of it? Why are you worried about earth faults when we have loads of devices that can be installed to disconnect them automatically these days?

Just what are you talking about?

Thanks for your valuable advice. I am talking about this topic because I think the system may be more reliable in that case. We don't need any cable or conductor to transmit power.

Re: Is it possible to transmit bulk amount of power through wireless system?

Oh yes! There certainly is. Do you have a microwave oven or ever used one? They contain cavity magnetrons. Look them up. Also klystrons. Both convert electrical energy to electromagnetic waves at microwave frequencies; the first directly and the second, by means of amplication. Klystrons, especially, can be scaled to provide multi-megawatt output power from a single device and, these, in-turn, can be incorporated into phased arrays of arbitrary size and power. Both are mature technologies; the klyston was invented in 1937, the modern form of the cavity magnetron, in 1940.

On the receiving side you would use antenna arrays, tuned to the particular frequency used. The technology at this end is much simpler (in principle): you simply rectify the incoming signal at each array element and sum them, adjusting the antenna phasing across the array to smooth the pulsating DC into a continuous current (there are other techniques). What you do with it after that is up to you.

Re: Is it possible to transmit bulk amount of power through wireless system?

There is work being carried out using inductive coupling for the charging of electrical vehicles. Basically... an air gap transformer where the vehicle to be charged drives on to or over a large plate that forms the other side of the transformer. This delivers large amounts of energy to the target vehicle for recharging of its on board batteries. This requires both halves of the system to be very close to each other.

But... based on your qustion, I gather you are asking about "beaming" power to utilization devices. As in... connect incoming utility power to a "distribution point" then have energy flow by a wirless means to your devices that consume the energy in a given area. If that is what you are asking about... No. Given the state of the art today, that cannot be done.

If you define power as the rate of doing work, then you need to put some numbers on these things to make any sense. After all, a candle, a horse and a waterfall are all wireless sources of power, as is the wind, waves and the sun.

Whatever you are drinking, may I have a pint, please?

Tesla tried to do that; google 'Wardenclyffe Tower'.

Wikipedia has a long article on various ways that broadcast power can be done:

I assume you've heard of others before you with a similar ambition.

I believe that, were such a system in place, our modern love affair with personal communication devices would be over. If I'm correct, adoption of wireless power transmission, even if ever proven practical, will never come to be.

All trucks have wires. At least some to run the headlights and the radio.

It is possible, but certainly not practical for much other than perhaps space applications....for a number of reasons...

http://www.spaceislandgroup.com/biz/NASAPowerP1.mov

"Wireless Power Transmission (using microwaves) is well proven. Experiments in the tens of kilowatts have been performed at Goldstone in California in 1975[8][9][10] and more recently (1997) at Grand Bassin on Reunion Island.[11] In 2008 a long range transmission experiment successfully transmitted 20 watts 92 miles (148 km) from a mountain on Maui to the main island of Hawaii.[12]"

The only truly massive wireless power source to the Earth is what our Sun already does. This is not a very efficient form of power distribution but when you start with 384 yotta-watts [10^24W] of power, efficiency is not a problem.

Yes, there is a way. But the problem is getting the electricity back into the wires on the receiving end, without spillover.

Looks like that guy wasn't ready with his grip... he spilled quite a bit. Maybe a bigger box on the wall would have helped?

Is it Possible to Transmit Bulk Amount of Power Through Wireless System?

Not efficiently. It's hard to beat a copper wire for getting electrical energy from point A to point B. Wireless is only useful for convenience where efficiency is not critical, such as charging phones without having to mess with wires.

In college, my room mate dated a girl who's father was a scientist who was part of the Manhattan Project and the H-Bomb projects, really interesting character. Anyway he had a scheme that was actually considered at the time, to put up a ring of orbiting satellites that would collect solar power from the sun non-stop at the North Pole, then beam high intensity focused microwaves to glaciers in Alaska to melt them and create water flow from which we could extract energy.he said that the only issue they had at that time (mid 1960s) was getting the power from Alaska down to the lower 48 states. In other words, they never really though the other consequences through.

Same guy told me that just prior to the first H-bomb test on Eniwetok Atoll in 1952, he was among a group of scientists who feared that setting off a hydrogen based bomb using deuterium, an isotope of hydrogen, so close to the surface of the ocean where naturally occurring deuterium is plentiful, could start an uncontrolled reaction that would burn up the entire atmosphere on earth and kill us all. They did it anyway...

You may be aware that small amounts of power are being transmitted wirelessly now. Higher amounts (subjective here) may be there in future. Check this link : Witricity

By spreading it over a huge area but, by that point it becomes reasonable to ask "Why not use photovoltaics instead and just let the Sun do its part?" And so we have these threads every year.

that is actually a great link. I just waiting to hear how they plan to incorporate this into refrigertors, electric ovens, microwave cookers, etc.

This is the only way to do wireless power transmission that makes sense. Although, I suppose on an industrial scale application, microwave or even radio masers could be utilized to transmit power to a critical application in a harsh environment so that trully there is not a chance of power loss (depending on how the maser is received and coupled to the industrial process.).

Yes, and I am sure we all know how efficient that is. not. I doubt all this wireless stuff will ever demonstrate high efficiency with low loss (at the receiver), but maybe I should do some more research on it.

Yes, it is possible to transmit power through a wireless system, It depends upon electrical conductivity. You have to use these components for wireless power transmission: Microwave Generator, Transmitting antenna and Receiving antenna (Rectenna). Wireless power transmission differs from that of wireless telecommunications, such as radio.

There are lot of experiments going on in this regards. But i think not yet materialised for mass transfer.

There are some successful experiments made by Korean engineers ( I think it is in Korea ) for re-charging electrical transport vehicles on its way without stopping the vehicle. This is possible by electromagnetic induction. A special road is designed on stretch having embedded electrical conductor . A receiver wlil be fitted on electrical vehicle (btm side). When the vehicle travel on this stretch of road the energy will be transmitted through electromagnetic induction and the battery fitted on the vehicle will be re-charged.

Re: Is it Possible to Transmit Bulk Amount of Power Through Wireless System?

Well, yes, but it is both wasteful and short range.

Consider that the intensity of a dipolar magnetic field (the simplest kind) decreases with the cube (not square) of the distance, ie, double the distance and the intensity drops to one-eighth of its closer value. Things quickly get worse when you add more poles.

Even when power is not being inductively transferred, it takes power to energize the coils, energy which is wasted unless the coils are activated only in the presence of a vehicle. Even then, energy is wasted by inductive coupling to the other metal components of vehicle resulting in eddy currents which only serve to heat them up. All in all it is not a very efficient approach.

I gather you think Ms. Rand was sexist in terms of thinking of men as troglodites? I thought the ascendency of troglodites (and highest aspiration) was to grabitate to political power. Having worked for a municipal power utility, after they force my retirement here in about a month or two, I will never again have anything further to do with politicians.

Hi everyone, I'm new here. I just confused on what transmit bulk amount of power through wireless system all about. I want to have some knowledge about it, while I'm searching about this, my laptop got broken, then I checked, its wire got grounded. So, I decided to find a great electrical contractor. Do you have any recommendation? Thanks.
