Using 50 hz 415VAC And 60 hz 415VAC Cable On Same Cable Tray

08/06/2014 12:17 PM

I would like to know genius advice on the usage of 415VAc 50 hz cable and 415vac 60 hz cable can be laid on a same cable tray. If so please provide relevant standard reference.

NFPA-70e or BS 7161

You'll need your own copy.

Local codes may apply.

Not enough information has been provided. You asked about the cable, the answer depends upon the nature of the systems those cables are connected to.

Can this be done without any serious problem, yes it can. Can this produce a problem with one circuit or with inductive heating of the cable tray, yes this can produce a problem. Can you figure out which answer fits your situation, yes you can. I have faith in you.

Now that you have your "yes man" answers, go do your homework.

How is it that you have two different line frequencies in the same facility?

He did not say that. Only that the cable is 50 or 60 hz.

You can lay them together but if you can operate them is the other question.

Also could you operate a 60 Hz cable with 50 Hz?

But that was not the question.

I am lost with this stuff anyway. Have fun!

There is no such thing as 50Hz cable or 60Hz cable. Cable does not care whether is it 50Hz, 60Hz, 133-1/3Hz, or 0Hz (DC). So the only time you might be needing to consider this issue is if, for some really oddball reason, you had both a 50Hz supply source and a 60Hz supply source in the exact same place in order for them to be in the same tray. That's why I thought the conversation needed to start there, because it is far far more likely that this entire thread is a joke or demnstrative of having been started by someone who is so incompetent as to not being qualified to take the any further without local expert help anyway.

I was pretty sure there was not difference in the cable.

Still interested where and why there would be two different systems.

How about a company that fabricates transformers for anywhere in the world. What about an international electric power equipment testing facility. You're only thinking of the final consumer.

You wrong on this one! I am not thinking at all! I am asking what it could be because even so you might be right you are still guessing.

For a testing facility they could just test seperately and would even use the same cable. What do we know?

And then you would expect and international electric power test company to know their stuff and not asking this here.

I keep running my stuff on 100Hz and dont worry about it!

No, they're no relation at all. Not even distant cousins. Their offspring would be sterile like a mule. The conjugation would die at one generation. In fact neither are capable of any kind of procreation....

Oh, you mean the other meaning of relation, like correlation. Yes they correlate and influence each other.

They don't have feelings for each other.

The OP hasn't learned much since this, "three phase transformer of capacity 3600 KVA,output voltage of 433vac,Rated current secondary : 4833 Amps.In this regard we want to run a cable from transformer secondary to Incomer ACB located at distance from 300 metres from the transformer location. How many runs of cables to be laid ? What are the design factors involved in designing the cables? otherwise selecting Busduct is good option or not? pl expain in details." posted in 2008.

All the questions presented by he/she/they display a similar grasp of electricity and it's use and application. In short, none.

Possibly an international research facility that must produce all sorts of frequencies, currents, voltages and other what not that are outside of the nominal power distribution realm.

Oh, never mind me. I forgot that we're in student ridicule mode instead.

Well maybe, but I am not aware of any country with 415VAC 60Hz. Does that exist anywhere but in the poster's mind? There is 380VAC in both frequencies, as the South American countries try to stay with the Western frequency "standard" (said somewhat facetiously), but use different voltages.

I can see someone in India getting a deal on 60 Hz equipment and using it at 50.

Not just India, but any place trying to squeeze the last penny out of a business venture.

It makes sense that they would give the job of making it work to the lowest bidder, regardless of the bidder's competence.

But, you know me. Always the cynic.

ACK!

Those pictures nearly gave me a heart attack.

That's like seeing those fake 'slumtown' pics, where the buildings look like ramshackle huts and rusted shipping containers stacked on each other at odd angles, with 'bay rooms' jutting out precariously out beyond the level below, the whole structure looking ready to collapse.

...

Please tell me those 'slumtown' pics are fake, even if you have to lie to me. My heart can't take two scares so close together.

I'd enough trouble getting my head around a plant using four different LV voltages. 660V, 550V, 433V and 380V. (It's a long story.)

Two frequencies would add all kinds of possibilities.

I worked in a test facility where we had 0-800V 3 phase 50Hz, 60Hz and 400Hz in the same cable trays. Only 100kVA at 60Hz and 20kVA at 400Hz though. We had a shed outside with some elderly rotary converters.

Well I guess some type of answer is appropriate.

Under the Canadian code...

A cable tray is considered a raceway. The rules state that... If conductors or cables are connected to different sources of voltage...

They will be separated by the metal armour or metal sheaths of cable assemblies,

Or separated by non-metallic insulating barriers,

Or provide power to or control only remote devices and all conductors must all be rated for the highest voltage in the tray.

There are a few other requirements... but that is the important stuff. Time to hit the books my friend.

Now that lots of motors are driven by variable speed drives, cables with different frequencies are commonplace in industrial situations. Provided that the cables are shielded (wire armoring is sufficient) and the shield is grounded (at one end only to prevent ground loops), there are no problems.

Re: Using 50 hz 415VAC And 60 hz 415VAC Cable On Same Cable Tray

in my case is totally different, supply voltage is 415AC 50 hz system.some of the equipments, we are getting from USA which are 480VAC,60hz system.

Hence we are proposing 60 hz 480VAC static frequency converter in the electrical where we kept main pcc.

That's why i asked this question whether 50 hz cables and 60 hz cables of voltages 415VAC and 480VAC respectively in a same cable tray or not.

hope you have might have understood my question. I want some technical reason to use same cable tray or not to use the same cable tray.

See answers 13 and 18. If you are installing armored or shielded cables they will not cause any problems and can go on the same tray. If you are installing unarmored or unshielded cables they could cause problems on long runs and in fault conditions, so you have to put them on different trays.

If you were planning to use unarmored/unshielded cable, calculate which is more cost effective, substituting armored/shielded cable or adding a second tray.

Paragraph 1 sums up the technical argument. Use paragraph 2 to back up your decision with an economic justification.
