08/10/2014 10:02 AM

Please give cost comparision between Over Head Line and Underground Cables for transferring 50 Mw Power through 66 kV Over Head Line or Underground Cables for a distance of 2 Km. Which one will be more economical and reliable and maintenance friendly .

We will need much more information if we are to act as your free consultancy service, we don't even know anything about the site so how are we supposed to even offer a guess!

My comments relate to UK and Europe.

Installation. As a general rule, underground cables are 4-14 times more expensive to install than overhead cables. The more urban the area the greater the cost difference. There are a few exceptions, both will need planning permission but the overhead will receive more objections, and in tourist areas or areas of outstanding natural beauty that could lead to a protracted and expensive public enquiry, eliminating any savings.

Maintenance. In rural situations underground is less expensive to maintain but if you have to dig up and reinstate urban roads and pay costs for traffic disruption then the costs are much greater. Weather and environmental conditions are significant, underground cables are better protected from the weather, so in hurricane areas this is a major advantage, in earthquake zones, a major disadvantage. Breakdowns in underground cables take longer to repair than overhead, so if there are no alternative parallel power lines to maintain supply, the financial penalties imposed for loss of supply can for outweigh the maintenance costs. Overhead lines are much easier to modify and add new a tapping so in areas that are rapidly developing overhead would have an advantage.

Operation. Because the cables are constructed differently, the power losses in underground cable are normally slightly less that overhead. The difference is so small that the cable would need to operate for many years to justify the additional installation costs.

There are so many variables that answers to your questions can only be determined in relation to each individual installation.

There was an earthquake in Basildon yesterday. Reports indicate there was £2.38-worth of damage. More at 10.

CR4 doesn't usually deal with <...cost...>. There are far too many variables, including the currency in which the things are to be displayed. Further, such deliberations are commercially sensitive; it is unwise to disclose these things in a global, anonymous, Engineering forum.

The best practice is to engage in a proper commercial tendering process at the facility locally, following which comparisons may be made between several on the basis of local specifications, practices and conditions.
