It has been reported that the depth of the epicenter was only 4.3 miles deep, and only 6-to 9 miles from Napa...The shallow nature of the collapse and proximity could be rather destructive....but all in all it was not that bad....

http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-quake-near-napa-jolts-bay-area-20140824-story.html#page=1

There was a 6.9 quake back in 1989 that did a lot more damage and injuries...

It could ruin your day but that is still minor damage.

A Ga to you both.

To see those smashed bottles of wine, is akin to my child being run over by a bus. A real travesty.

I'm truly sorry to hear this. Particularly because this picture lifts my spirits [no pun intended].

A 6.0 quake in most places in the US let alone most other places in the world, a quake of this magnitude at nearly any depth would inflict massive, immediate loss of life. Instead the latest estimate I heard was about 90 people injured with only 3 of these people seriously injured. I certainly do not wish to belittle the trauma inflicted upon anyone in this incident and I pray for all to heal as quickly as possible. I hope that the injury and particularly fatality numbers stay the same through out the day.

I do want to salute the effectiveness of the frequently maligned California building codes.

As for this picture I see maybe a 10% loss of product and a 0% loss of life. This seems good to me.

Um, yeah.

Especially considering that the majority of buildings in and around Napa are over 100 years old.

Somehow I doubt we'd be singing the praises of California's intrusive government if this was centered in San Fransico.

California spent billions to figure out that single family, stick built dwellings are the safest.

So let's re-think that snobbery toward boxed wine.

Some sort of netting or webbing attached to the shelves may have save a lot of stock. And the stock would still been accessible. Any other ideas?

The loss of wine is a heartbreaker.

Fortunately it looks like the barrels just got tossed around a little, and the contents are intact. I've logged a lot of hours days up in wine country.

Re: Napa Shaker

The absolute magnitude of an earthquake and the distance to the epicenter are just two factors of the damage caused at a particular location. The more important factor is the underlying geology. The Napa Valley is a large basin filled with only partially consolidate sediments which can undergo significant movement with just a little shake.

A striking example of this was the Mexico City earthquake in 1985. Centro (downtown) Mexico City, built on top of a bowl of Jello, and was totally flattened. Meanwhile, a few miles away in Coyoacan, my wife's house, which was built on bedrock felt only a mild shaking.

I think the Richter magnitude relates to the total energy released. My understanding is that this quake was shallow and close by Napa, so the damage would be higher in that local area.

So where are the engineering smarts to suck up the grape juice and rebottle it ... a Napa vintage 2014 wine blend. Turn a disaster into an advantage.
