Hydrotest Pressure

08/26/2014 5:43 AM

Friends,

I have an 8"-Sch80 - A106.B / BFW / 900# line .

The design Pressure for this line = 114 Kg/Cm2 G

The hydrotest pressure (as per spec.) = 171 Kg/Cm2 G

But,from ASME B16.5 flange rating table, maximum pressure for class 900 is 147.75 @ amb temp(60deg c).So,is this hydrotest pressure @ 171 Kg/Cm2 G feasible ?

opinions awaited.....thanks in advance

The test pressure is certainly feasible. What is unknown is the line's ability to withstand the test pressure. That is the reason for the test!

You should be consulting with a known, licensed engineer for your questions.

The amount of liability assumed by you, using answers from an anonymous forum, could be large.

Are you sure you want to bet your life on an answer from an unknown source, as good as it MAY be?

If you want to retain the ASME certifications. Contact the original manufacturing, and requested drawings. Then Take to a ASME certified shop, (preferable the same shop that built it) that carries a 'U' or 'R' stamp, have them look at it, and see if you can have them recertify it. Under the new rating. Just investigating it may cost you money.

ASME B16.5 give to us the the Working Pressure. In this case is around 153 Bars (Plus & Less 2 Bars).

Then, and in concordance with tis Standard (B-16.5) Point 2.5 System Hydrostatic Test:

Flanged joints and flanged fittings may be subjected

to system hydrostatic tests at a pressure not to exceed

1.5 times the 100°F rating rounded off to the next

higher 25 psi. Testing at any higher pressure is the

responsibility of the user, subject to the requirements

of the applicable code or regulation.

Then, the Hydro for your flanges is 229 Bars (171 Bars is acceptable)

"I have an 8"-Sch80 - A106.B / BFW / 900# line"

8" - outside diameter of pipe

sch 80 - thickness of pipe

A106 Gr.b - Pipe classification as per ASTM

900# - Pressure rating of piping system

Btw, what is 'BFW'? (Butt Fusion Weld or Beveled for Field Weld??)... am curious...
