File Sharing

09/08/2014 6:45 PM

I'm putting out RFQ for an automated actuator. I have some animations for assembly. and since it pretty good size it can't be emailed.

Is there a site/site recommendations where I can put it on so it can be shared?

Thanks

I've used this for certain things, but delete the program when I'm finished. It works well and I haven't got anything malicious from it, but I've got a gut feeling that I don't want it residing on my computer forever. Might just be paranoia.

http://www.bittorrent.com/

There are people that use it for copyrighted material, which may be the reason it kind of bugs me. Theft is theft, even if it isn't bittorrent's doing.

My oldest daughter just loaded 360+ pictures of her wedding to the cloud, but like kramarat mention, I'd be nervous about putting anything that be stolen.

NEVER put anything on the cloud that you wouldn't want hackers, your mother, your competition or your worst enemy to see.

I totally agree, tho Utube isn't any safer either. There's also XMind, I haven't played with it much, but may be another avenue for phoenix911 to explore.

Oh wait...it's just animations?

Upload it to Youtube if it's not top secret. They can watch the animations and get themselves up and running. When they're done, I'm pretty sure you can delete it.

I'll think about that. Because it's the company's. I should show to be somewhat cautious IP.

But the design itself is nothing out of the ordinary, and it wouldn't be dimensioned.

I did an exploded view of it, and it got pretty hard to read with the tracing lines. But on the software, I saw an animation button, I hit it, and the explode view reversed and reassembled its self. Thought that was pretty cool. So I'd remove the trace lines from the cad drawing. Balloon it out. And put a link to the animation.

In school I had used MS file sharing.... Can't remember what it was... Sky something... I'll look into

Thanks for the input.

The animation you describe is very cool...try www.dropbox.com, they can accommodate videos as well, so your memory size shouldn't be an issue.

I can't vouch that this is not cloud storage, but even if it is....so what? Your data can be pinched from anywhere that's online.

You are right, but also, you can set "restricted access" on YouTube in some ways (that I have forgotten about ).....you need to be a full member, just to upload anyway!

I haven't done it for a few years now....but it wasn't difficult, knowing the name and then just a password I think....

How many people?

You can just burn some DVDs and drop them in the mail.

If you sign up for youtube, you can set up a video so that only certain people can view it. It's done with some kind of privacy setting along with a password for your coworkers. Probably safe.

Re: File Sharing

Everything else was being emailed. Just thought it be great just to have a link.

At work, we have no media for digital copying to in our office supplies, I'd have to put in a req order to get disks... I usually would just grab some of my own disks at home. But I have to stop doing that, thought this may be better.

My computer hard drive was going bad, I wanted to make sure everything was backed up, so I went to office max and picked up a portable hard drive. And backed up. It crashed soon after. It was a good thing, after I found out how difficult it would be to retrieve my data from the back ups.

I'm putout an RFQ for OEM contractors to build of my designs that's customized to clean out a section of a reactor at our company. Included is for them to build and assemble it.

As I mentioned earlier, the CAD exploded view got pretty busy and was difficult to read.

There was an animation/movie button on a CAD fly out menu. I hit it and it reassembled itself.

That animation reassembly file is what I'd like to post. It would help the contractors in the assembly of it. Without have to break the final assembly in yet more exploded drawing views.

Re: File Sharing

Basically I'm with Lyn on the "don't trust the cloud" point of view. But, where I work a lot of material ends up on DropBox. They have both personal and business plans. Lots of companies use it. Ex Secretary of State Rice is on the board of directors. It's in the cloud but it is probably about as safe as you can get in the cloud without extreme effort.

I'm provided with a paid for DropBox account but I think that 2 GB accounts are free.

When you put files on DropBox in the "normal way" only people with the DropBox password can access them (usual cloud warning). A nice feature of DropBox is the "share a link" feature. When you click on "Share a Link" DropBox will create a DropBox link with a dozen or so random numbers and letters in the right hand side of the URL. You can email this link to people and they just access it like any URL. If you like then the next day, next week, whatever you can remove the file and thus the like is dead. Pretty easy and reasonably secure for commercial applications.

Dropbox sounded good until you mentioned Ex Secretary of State Rice which would naturally include the Bush Administration, which whom authorized NAS to hack anybody and everybody. I don't want anything to do with Rice,or any kind of rice, Thank You.

Well, on second thought, at least you'll know you'll be hacked

I don't know if you want to call this good or bad but I suspect that the material on DropBox is probably a little more secure than the contents of the email. If you were willing to send it by normal email then you may have defined your level of security as being about equal to DropBox and the other similar services others suggested.

I have that, forgot all about that. I haven't used it is a long time. I agree about the cloud, this being only a animation, it's a one off for a customize process. So, I not too concerned about it.

As mentioned, Dropbox works well, there's also Windows Live & Office Live, all free. I've used them all at various times to share CAD files & videos. Some of them, possibly the Office & Windows, let you add passwords & limit the time that the file is available as well as limiting downloads.

You could store it in dropbox, then send links to the folks permitted to access it. I did this with a pretty big (283MB) video to get it to Germany.

Re: File Sharing

What CAD program are you using? How many parts in the assembly? Solidworks is great with their eDrawings tool. Instead of an animation file you could save the assembly in exploded/non exploded configurations with an animated explosion. On your end everything is heavy for creating the explosion, but after you do the work everything can be exported in light weight mode.

Don't know if that is an option with the software you're using. Already asked, but what are you using? What file type do you end up with? How big? "one click animations," regardless of the program, do a ton of things in the background. As you just found this feature search the help for defaults. You could be exporting a 4k HD video file depending on default settings when a 480 x 480 format could get the job done.

Let me know the file type and size as well as attributes. I may be able to compress it. Either way I could set you up with a login to my webserver/page hosted at media temple. Right now it's an empty page with basic file structure. Friend of mine started working there when his dad was running things and he got his own server that has been forgotten. He subbed me out a section of that server. You need to log in securely but here's the rub, I don't have a security certificate because the site isn't even started so the web browser grabs his cert which is out of date. I doubt any sane person would try to grab your file (s) as an up to date browser makes it seem like the world will end if you continue. But if you know what's up before hand it's no big deal.

Pm me for the login URL to see what I mean, or if you'd like to upload there. Like I said, it's a blank page so I don't care if gets blown up. I can just hit the reset button to blue everything away and start a fresh page.

Steve

Forgot to add, uunlimited bandwidth as well so you could share with whomever you'd like.

Most modern Video formats are already compressed, you cannot make a file smaller without reducing the quality at the same time......

Small amounts of quality loss can save large amounts of storage. It hinges on what is for you acceptable.

I tried a number of resolutions and file type. file types are huge difference.
