Flange Face Finish and Gasket Type

09/09/2014 7:31 AM

I have procured valves with end flanges having "Smooth Finish" which has roughness value is 250 AARH (6.3 microns)

The mating flanges for these valves are "Stock Finish" that is having a roughness of 50 microns.

There is a note regarding stock finish in client standard that is "Note 1: The "stock finish" facing is not defined in MSS SP 6. For Flat Face or Raised Face (stock finish) facing, the roughness average range is 6.3 to 12.5 microns (AARH = 250 to 500 micro inches). Pitch and depth of machining groove shall be per MSS SP 6, Table 1. However, roughness in excess of 12.5 microns (AARH greater than 500 micro inches) is acceptable to a maximum of 50 microns, provided groove parameters per MSS SP 6 table 1 are maintained."

The problem is which type of gasket shall I use here as the piping class says this "Stock finish facing for use of flat gasket and smooth finish facing for spiral wound gasket"

Can I,

1. Just use a spiral wound gasket?

2. Machine the mating flanges to smooth finish and use a spiral wound gasket?

3. Just use a flat gasket?

Thanks in advance

Use two gaskets: flat against the stock finish flange, spiral wound against the smooth flange. Note that the between-gaskets interface is flat vs. corrugated, which has already been established as a valid combination.

What is flowing through the piping? The gasket material must be compatible with the material in the piping that it will be in contact with.

Good Luck, Old Salt
