One Pair of Glasses?

09/26/2014 5:12 PM

One pair of glasses to see far, near, in between, that work after you leave the doctors office. Multi focal lenses that don't require a precise head position. Impossible?

I've had several pair and I'm still not sure of your answer. Some get pretty close. Others not so close.

No, not impossible, you just need a pinhole lens (no lens at all that is) that needs no focusing, but very sensitive retina to see anything. Now for classic glasses, real world physics say no, it can't be done, but then a whole lens focusing mechanism controlled by your brain (or the government) could also be implanted in the eyeball, or some other place convenient. Nanotechnology is here. S.M.

The glasses would have to know what you're looking at.

If they weren't tied into the entire system, they wouldn't be able to tell if you were trying to make out a distant street sign, or the small print on a pill bottle.

Impossible for now.

Well I have a pair that are graduated focus, the closer the lower, the further the higher focal point on the lens....you focus on what you're looking at tilting your head up or down....Now a pair that doesn't require proper positioning just doesn't make sense, the only way to do that I can think of is to vary the eye's focus, which you can do by applying pressure on the eye socket.....so technically it could be done with a thought controlled variable sized eye socket implant and the glasses just be used for magnification....but that wouldn't work for everyone I don't think...and might be rather difficult to get used to, so probably not worth the effort and risk associated with the implant mechanism....now if the glasses were actually oled screens, and the picture you were seeing was via camera mounted like in the glasses, and the focus was controlled by infrared laser, like a camera, then it might work....

Applying pressure on the eye socket to control focus? You realize what that would feel like, don't you? constant 'sinus pressure' eyeaches. (For those who have never had sinus pressure, (yes, both of you. are you two even human, how have you gone this long without experiencing this at least once?) it's like having someone poking your eye from INSIDE YOUR SKULL.) That constant low-level pain can be very distracting and lead to short tempers. I think the LAST thing this planet needs is MORE short-tempered people, we're way over-quota on that as is.

I always though it was the Engineers forgetting to drop the 'cranky old man' act we all seem to develop so we don't have everyone in the plant coming to us to do their thinking for them.

Seriously, some days it seems like we've got people here who couldn't pour piss out of a boot if the instructions were written on the heel.

Instead of tilting your head, you could automate the position of your eyeglasses.

1. Moving your nose up and down?

2. Make a lifter that is connected to your chin and move your mouth up and down?

3. You could also make a system that works with cables, to your ears, or other moveable body parts.

Check the lynn-door collection.

Re: One pair of glasses?

...and I'd like a back that can still lift 100lb bags of grain without pain, and be able to walk without a cane. (poetic huh? ) Eyes that could do all that left me around 40. Finding a good "eye doctor" that can fit me with what I want, not what he and the computerized test machines think I need, is another challenge!

At the moment I have bifocals with the line, I tried the progressive and they made me sea sick! I've gotten used to the line and have had good luck for many years, now that I've found a "good" eye doctor. I have a second pair of bifocal dark sun glasses for driving. For me the sweet spot is being able to drive and look straight out the windshield at the road with the upper lens, and look down to the dash and see the instruments with the lower lens, without moving my head.

Yup - getting old sucks, but it beats the alternative by quite a bit!

You (and I) both need "Trifocal" glasses.

I had them years ago, they stop that problem of "in between" objects, though I prefer Bifocals for driving the same as you.

The worst amount of money I spent was for a pair of those "progressive", expensive and all straight lines look bent, really ad for woodworking, though I now know how to avoid the effects....

My next pair will be trifocals again.....except for driving!!

I have the trifocals. They work fine, however, when I try to rewire a ballast over my head I still need to pullout the $3 glasses I bought at the hardware store to be able to see. Also, things are getting harder and harder to see without a whole lot of light but the VA says my cataracts need to get ripe before they can pluck them. So I guess we just need to live in the society we have and suck it up. And as to pin holes. That is a joke if you think about it. Especially with cataracts.

I am the same, when you need "near" at the top of the glasses. Its normal!! I weld with cheap glasses behind the mask for the same reasons....

I own one pair of safety glasses which came with 'near' lenses in the normal place at the bottom and with another set of 'near' lenses at the top. This is a blessing when crawling under a dashboard or doing ANY overhead work..

I have since been looking for replacements with a slightly stronger lense - but the shop where I got them disavows any knowledge of how to get them.

They are available online, naturally: http://www.safetyglassesusa.com/bf30.html

Re: One Pair of Glasses?

I wish to differ. NO glasses at all are better and I have that after nearly being blind with cataracts in both eyes. At the time, the IOL(inter Ocular Lens)were very new and surgeons not heavy on the ground. I had multi-focal lenses fitted to both eyes, one a few weeks after the examination, time to have the IOL made and the second 3 week later. No stitches just a 2.5 to 3mm cut on the outside of the coloured part of the eye to face off the old clouded lens and broken up with untra-sound and the cloudy part vacuumed out and then the plastic lens squashed with a special pliers to fit and then a small hook to lock the tail of the curved spring into the envelope of the old lens. Cleaning for the time after the operation with a flannel washer and No More Tears baby wash to keep all infections out was a bit daunting but overcome the paranoia.

One lens has a very close and a farther away focal length rings of curvature and the other lens has the in-between focal length rings. The brain sorts out the vision very quickly and I have 20 / 20 vision overall and there is no need to move the head to see things clearly as everything is visible including the peripheral vision which was not impeded.

Cost was high in 1998 but the price has dropped substantially since then.

My old glasses and cases are sitting in the cupboard never to be used again.

Re: One Pair of Glasses?

This forum really needs a like button in addition to good answer. You beat me to the punch by hh:mm (damn tablet!). My dad had a bunch of "floaties" in his eyes, as well as junk accumulated while working as a heavy equipment mechanic, and then 33 years in the army. I think a "low level" cataract was involved as well, but I'm not certain. The pressing problem was caused by dime store eye doctors, aka military doctors, that either didn't see the junk in his eyes, didn't care, didn't find it noteworthy, or didn't feel it was worth regular follow ups. A # of years after retiring an "outside" doctor did find that the metal embedded in the eyes was a problem that needed attention, especially the ferrous metal that was rusting! Come to think of it, he did have a worsening cataract in ONE eye. That fact is important, as the eye doc wanted to replace both lenses because of the damage caused by rusting steel and iron, but the military/govt/whatever partially subsidized insurance he and my mother received after serving 33 YEARS would only pay for the lens replacement in which the cataract was getting very bad (memory is coming back). So he had all the junk plucked out of his eyes, and the one lens replacement. So he ended up with 20/20 vision without any corrective devices for the first time since being a kid, at least in one eye anyway. Still legally blind without corrective lenses in the other eye, just like I am, only for me it's both eyes. It is really quite amazing, both extreme nearsightedness and astigmatism were wiped out completely. His situation kinda sucks now. Can't wear glasses because the lens for his bad eye is so heavy compared to a "fake" lens, so he is forced to wear a contact in one eye which absolutely sucks because of extremely dry eyes. I inherited that too, the new hydra-whatever contacts are miles ahead of what was available even 10 years ago, but we both go through eye drops like crazy and can still only wear them for about 8 hours before having to peel them out. So if you want perfect glasses (no glasses), just make sure you have good insurance and then get some cataracts.:p

Re: One Pair of Glasses?

Snap!

I had bi-focals for many years and I found these difficult to get on with, particularly those distances at about "arms length" away, I found that a real pain. I then went to multi-focal lenses, these I did find a hell of a lot better, particularly at that awkward distance at "arms length".

About six years ago I had my cataracts "done" and I have never looked back. I wear off the shelf sun glasses and I still have a pair of multi- focal transition lenses that I may have to use for very small print and for night time driving to reduce glare...........one thing I did find after the cataracts were done was bright sunlight and car headlights at night, otherwise, all good. Reasonably expensive but, well worth it.

Well, since I have had to wear glasses for 43 years and counting and had to go to trifocals about 10 years ago, my experience say the answer to your question is no. With that said, I use progressives and have found that the larger (ie less stylish) frames allow for more viewing area (height) for each "zone". Unfortunately, I do not follow this simple principle of physics and prefer to have something a little less geriatric in style. I also have the optician make the farsighted section larger, starting in the center of the lens so I can drive and stare, relatively, straight ahead instead of having to look down to see through the correct magnification zone. It does reduce near and intermediate zones but I personally find this less troubling than the driving issue. I also hate frameless lenses, love the light weight but absolutely despise the fact that they can be bent out of adjustment very easily and the optician is marginal in skills at making them straight. I'm just waiting to get reexamined so I can buy new frames. I would consider lasik but my neighbors lasted less than 10 years (about the typical lifespan of this correction as I understand it) and he is again in glasses. One of my coworkers just went through this and has had vision issues and is not much better off that he was before the procedure. Regards.

Agreed! A little vanity self -esteem never hurts. My first multi-focals didn't work, or rather, I couldn't get used to turning my head all the time, to see where I was driving.

I call it the 'ostrich syndrome'..

I reverted to two pairs of specs, one for reading and one for seeing. Can be a bit of a nuisance at times, but surviving OK.

Re: One Pair of Glasses?

You have no idea how relevant your self esteem comment is. I've been wearing glasses since 6th grade (I'm only 33, but I'll be wearing glasses until I die, get LASIK or whatever the hot procedure is at the time, or cataracts, sometimes contacts), entire school has a vision test in the gym with the charts 20-30 feet away or whatever the charts are designed for. I got called up and was asked to read whatever line of letters I could that was closest to the bottom, to which I asked/responded, "what letters?" I couldn't even see the big fat E at the top!

I was REALLY pissed and distraught. I loved flying, and we lived just outside the "crash cone" for Hill AFB's main runway, so I got to see F-16's taking off everyday to train at the range or head home after maintenance, as well many full afterburner "stand it on end" takeoffs which signaled an engine change or a hot shot pulling Top Gun crap. I knew my career of flying high performance jets, or even transports, had just been torpedoed by that damn eye test. I know kids day that's what they want to do when they grow up, but more than a dream for me, dad was in the military, and I was already assembling lists of what I needed to do to make it happen, and even looking at congressman I'd might try to get an appointment/recommendation from to get into the academy, asking the pilots autographing pictures for tips on getting selected/drawn into the first stage of the pilot program, etc.

So that was long run up LOL. Apologies. So I was pissed about the flying, and the terrified about wearing glasses. I was an awkward kid to begin with, treated like crap in Utah because I was transplant from Massachusetts when my dad was transferred (they put me in freaking speech therapy because of my accent! Talk about a self esteem killer), I wasn't Mormon (while family couldn't believe the persecution for that, the other AGR guys in the unit actually set up a desk for my dad right at the entrance to the reserve center like he was a receptionist, that lasted a couple weeks until he said F-you I'm a part of this unit and I may be enlisted but because of my MOS I'm vital to the success of this unit and you don't want to piss off), and that was enough to put me on the crap list because nearly everything, including certain school stuff, was organized by what "ward" you were in (what church you went to).

So the parents made the giant mistake of saying pick whatever you want. GIANT MISTAKE!!!! I picked out a pair of giant frames because that's what my dad wore before he started going with the free BCG's from the military, and I picked out a light brown time for my lenses. SMF! These appeased me a bit, until the first school day after I got them. All the self esteem I got from picking out every aspect of my glasses was quickly erased, and then some more for good measure! As an already awkward kid, very much so in the social department, being giant because of an early growth spurt made me physically awkward, and already shunned because of my religion and looked at like I was "slow " because of my accent, the GLASSES WERE JUST ICING ON THE CAKE TO PULL SELF ESTEEM TO AN ALL TIME LOW.

It sucked! Apologies again for long back story, as well as the fact that this was made into one huge paragraph. Line breaks are there, but my tablet doesn't seem to add them correctly.

Steve

I had bifocals, and was getting a headaches by tilting my head at a position to see my computer screen.

When I renewed my prescriotion, I had (2) glasses that solved my headaches, but was a real pain in the butt.

I ended up getting a couple of reading glasses for $20.00, and have a few laying around.

But to have one pair that is reactive to your needs would be good, otherwise, I was thinking of going in for corrective laser surgery consultation and see if that is an option.

I had the same problem with bending my head back to look at the computer, and the neck pains were exacerbated by getting rear-ended 4 times in 5 years. My optometrist suggested computer glasses, and these helped greatly. I don't use computers on the go, so the 2-glasses solution is fine for me. I leave computer glasses where I interact with a computer.

But now I want more-- a pair of computer glasses with a bi-focal inset for when I have some hard-copy reading to do when I have my computer glasses on. Personally, I like the lined bi-focals. They help me get oriented quickly. The line is good.

Driving, the gauges are not as clear as can be, but clear enough. I'd never buy a car with tiny digital gauges, though; with analogs, all you need to see is the angle.

Perhaps the key is to use one of the online, cheap optical sites, and get a bunch of glasses you can leave where you use them. Goggles4U, eyebuydirect, zennioptical-- these places can give you glasses for $10-50 a pair instead of the Luxotica-monopoly standard prices of frames that make buying 4 pair of glasses prohibitive. OK, so they're made in China or Pakistan, and picking frames online is a drag, but it makes an alternative strategy possible. Quality is generally good-but-not-great, and the frames are pretty flimsy, though for a little extra, they offer sturdier ones. Next time, I'll get a set of normal bifocals, driving glasses (long distance uppers, computer distance lowers), sunglasses (bifocals), and computer glasses (computer distance uppers and reading lowers). Probably for half the price of one pair of domestic-optician glasses.

If you don't have to carry them around with you, that's half the battle there.

The most interesting pair of glasses that I saw in use, were worn by an older gent that was an electrician. He had bifocals but had the near lens cut at both the bottom and top of the lens. That way he could look up at a wiring job without having to strain his neck back! He was also a pool shark (he taught me a lot! ) and when he looked "down" at the cue ball, his head was down and he was actually looking through that top lens...pretty cool guy I must say. Sadly I think he must be long gone now.

I was seriously considering laser surgery back when it was being franchised.

I happened to be involved in the turnkey startup of the Cummings back-up generator for one of the first centers in the area.

It took about 15 minutes for the Indian manufactured engine to overheat. The cause being the coolant thermostat installed upside down.

That was too critical for me.

Then perhaps resal surgery might help?

(I now, that was a shot at a cheap laugh. I'm sorry.)

If there were laws banning bad jokes, we'd have to shut down DC in its entirety, the whole place is one bad joke these days.

And we'd also have to jut Joisey off from the mainland and push it into the sea, although, that might be the best thing to happen to Joisey.

(Help, stop me before I pun again, use the cuffs, hit me with a gag order, anything!)

('Gag order'? It's worse than I thought, someone, please help!)

Nothing is impossible! Unfortunately sometimes our requirements or first thoughts come before their times. We want something when we think of it but we are well before the time for the solution to be found. There are glasses that see far, near, in between, that work after you leave the doctor's office. Unfortunately the solution isn't here yet. Sit back and enjoy what you have now. You are one of the fortunate people who can see something so enjoy yourself with what you have and not the frustration of not having what you want now.

I started out with reading glasses. Then came the whole lens corrective type. Then came the bi-focals. Now it is the progressives. They took a little getting used to but are the best so far. Doc says contacts are out of the question because of the potential of eye injury with some of the things I do. I want something that is perfect for my eyes all the time, can't be seen, won't slip down my football reconfigured nose, don't get dirty lenses I have to clean to be able to see and quite a few other things. I have a need for them now, but I'm before the time that they have been invented. My solution, enjoy what I've got and can have now. At least I can see. When I get on the pity pot all I have to do is look for the guy on the next block who walks with a red and white cane and with a beautiful black Lab with a special harness. I'll take what I've got. I'm better off than he is.

My practical solution for my needs is my regular glasses and a special pair that has a focal length of about 22" over all the lens to make it easier to paint my boats. For me it is the best that can be now, works out well and most importantly I can do what I want to do easier than before. (I got them free at one of those buy one get one free places)

If you wear glasses be thankful you need them. The alternative, a white and red cane, isn't anywhere as good as you've got it.

Good Luck, Old Salt

I wear single focal length lenses that allow me to see/read what's on my desk and computer monitor with no discomfort. Why would I need to see anything farther away than that?
