Brass Over Nickel Plating

10/06/2014 11:12 PM

I have googled about plating Brass onto Nickel, but all the results come back the other way putting nickel on brass.

so the question is, If I have a nickel plated ball, can I plate it with Brass?

Plating nickel plated cartridge brass to look like brass?

Why not just use brass brass. As in unplated?

I prefer unplated grass anyway. Less wear on sizing dies. Easier to polish.

Silly me. Maybe it's not "that" kind of brass.

"I prefer unplated grass anyway". Seriously, Lyn? LOL I know what you meant. I also agree 105% with "why not just brass brass?"

Trying to plate over nickel is going to be tough, not porous enough to allow bite, you're going to need a pretty large current to even think about getting it to adhere, probably going to have to remove the nickel first but the good part is that nickel comes off the same way it goes on.

Never had occasion to try brass over nickel but I don't think it would hold up well at all, but then again maybe it's ornamental? if so try bright copper it looks like gold!

I make a novelty clock.

http://www.idle-tyme.com

Years ago I used Brass plated balls in the clock because,,, well they looked pretty close to gold ya know? But the company I used to get the plated balls from that was awesome to work with has grown too big I guess to be bothered dealing with someone that wants like 3 to 4 thousand balls a year. Now their min order is like 100K. And no where else have I found an alternate at a decent price.

So I'm using a nickel plated ball right now. and who I am getting them from does not have the capabilities to make a brass plated version. So I was wondering if I might be able to plate them myself.

If gold plating is your cosmetic favorite, why not gold plate the nickel balls. Gold is easier to plate over nickel than brass. Another option is to use wood balls and coat them with gold leaf.

Leadshot maybe better base material or you may find copper plated leadshot and easily plate brass onto it.

even brass shot may be of use

What's under the nickel? If brass, just get rid of the nickel.

Brass is a mixture of metals. Plating it onto something will prove difficult as one of the metals will plate in precedence to the other spiecies in the mix. You'll find it easier to re-make the thing in solid brass instead.

Sure. You can also bronze plate your Olympic gold metal too.
