Stainless Steel Stove Pipe

10/13/2014 10:25 AM

I have scoured the internet for 22 gauge stainless, seam welded ( NOT spot welded or Seam Locked) stove pipe in 6" and 8" diameter.

Plenty of 24 gauge . . some 22 gauge that is seam locked and some that is spot welded.... but no seam welded, 22 gauge stainless.

Anyone have a source?

This is for the wood stove in the house, NOT the shop. I do not want it to rust where it comes through the wall and vents outside. Black pipe goes about 4 years at best and then its me and the ladder all day long..... too old and dizzy for climbing any more.... ha ha !

Any sheetmetal fabricator (HVAC) can make you one. that has a Pittsburgh machine

But usually its only goes to 24 gauge thickness and that is steel, or galvanized.

Stainless is hard, it may be done, but there's a good chance of wrecking the forming rolls.

Why not use the seam locked, and use SS through the wall as well?

Would you be able to use rigid stainless steel chimney liner instead of the stove pipe? If so, it would probably be easier to install and more aesthetic to look at. It is available in many locations and most is welded or seam welded (not spot). It will do the same job as the stove pipe and probably better. It is also available in single, double and triple wall configurations. Fittings are also available.

It should be easier to secure and install. An added benefit would be that it is much easier to locate than the stove pipe and closer to your location.

Good Luck, Old Salt

Multiple wall configurations also allow a larger temperature difference between ambient air and the flue gasses. This will reduce the buildup of creosote.

Hartshearth has some very heavy duty Black pipe and IF I do the chimney thing on the side of the house, it will outlast me! I had never found these guys. thank you for the heads up.

Heat stresses,

May be alright as a chimney, its just that whan you mentioned it reminded me back to my industrial arts classes in high school.

Our instructor made a double layered wood stove, out of heavy gauge sheets, (7 gauge inside I think, and a lighter gauge out side)

That was fine,

But he also used black pipe as a grate that air would also circulate through.

Now whether he tried to see how much he could get out of it, he fired it up and and the distortion was in my opinion unbelievable. there was no expansion joints, but there was cracking on the heat affected zones.

It was this pipe that was affected the most.

McGill seems to have 8" 22 gauge fully welded. If you search for 'stainless steel duct' instead of 'stove pipe', you may find it. The shipping may be $$$, is there someone near by that can roll and weld a sheet for you?

Our local tin knockers will make anything you want. I watched them the other day cutting stainless with an NC controlled plasma cutter for intersecting pipes of different diameters, the parts where a perfect fit --- better than those old paper templates! They tig weld and the work is great. I am sure you have a local HVAC tin knocker that can do the same.

Check in the Yellow Pages for a "Food Grade Stainless Steel Welding/Fabrication" shop. They will get the material and seam weld it for you.

I once had a friend in the mntc shop of a local dairy weld up stainless stacks for a Continental C90 engine. They turned a nice straw color by the exhaust ports. But they never required replacing again while we owned the plane.

Double wall with polished stainless exterior is easy to find in those sizes. A triple wall insulated flue pipe of said description is available and completely unnecessary for wood fired stoves. insulated flue will google well
