What Caused This Damage?

10/14/2014 12:58 PM

I'm looking for the reason why these stator windings are blackened. They don't have a burn pattern related to phase loss, rather they look like they overheated. But that's only an opinion. Any ideas? Thanks!

Where's the rotor, what does that look like..? From here it looks like it's been overheating, but it could just be an accumulation of oil and dirt...if the rotor smoked out, it could be soot...

Better also check the history of the motor with maintenance and staff working with the motor to see if anything had changed recently that could have caused or lead to the failure.

To me it looks like it either got Water into the windings or more likely the bearings have worn and the rotor & stator are brushing against each other and you have caught it before it shorts to earth... I'm guessing that you stripped it down because it wasa making noises that it shouldnt and wisely decided to investigate.

Not be wise again and get someone who knows how to rebuild motors to rebuild it for you.

Regards,

Sapper.

I see what appears to be a commutator cover in the back ground. If it is a DC motor with brushes it could be carbon stain. Especial if the motor was put into service and the varnish was still tacky.

I want to thank everybody for all of the input! The motor is a vertical hollow shaft unit that ran a well pump. It's 3 phase 460v.

Well don't do it again. Replace it.
