Can Anyone Help On Electric Over-Head Crane Pendant Cable Wiring Diagram

11/04/2014 7:51 AM

i ordered for a pendant control to replace a bad one and it came without the cable, just the control. i want to replace the old malfunctioning control with the newly arrived one but i just dont have an idea of the wiring, as the new control is a bit different from the old one. the new control has 6 terminals per switch, as against the old one that had 4. To explain this a bit, each switch inside the pendant control for the different travel (hoist up and down, trolley left and right, bridge forward and backward) on the old one is 4 while its 6 on the new one. can anyone help with a diagram on how to wire the entire pendant control, together with the emergency stop and start buttons? thanks

A schematic can be procured from the maker. Then a competent electrician can connect things properly.

Follow this procedure:.

  1. Before removing the wiring from one button, determine first what set of contacts it has (i.e. 2 N.O.s or 2 N.C.s or one of each).
  2. Then find the button which serves the same function on the new pendant.
  3. Using a multimeter, identify the set of new contacts that correspond to the old ones.
  4. Remove only the wiring from one old contact at the time, as you rewire to one new contact at the time.
  5. You'll have unused terminlas on every switch, just ignore them.

This is an extremely simple method, even for the unexperienced, but it requires great concentration, and diligence.

Do a neat job, don't make someone piss off later; it will add to your prestige.

Depending on the number of conductors, the wires should all be color coded as well. I have had to replace pendants before without diagrams and once you have traced all the wires and their colors, ensure that you record it somewhere for/in case of the next time. One thing I did to avoid the 1 wire at a time method was just to clip the wires in the existing pendant(after you have them recorded of course) leaving some of the insulation so you can see the colors.

You will lose a little conductor length, but normally that should not be a problem.

All true but somebody with enough skill of the craft to be able to sketch out a circuit from the components in their hands would not bother to ask a forum for a schematic without a manufacturer or model number for any part or assembly.

I suspect the difference in these switches is that the old switches had just individual, isolated N.O. and N.C. contacts per push button. While the new push buttons have two contacts that each have a N.O and a N.C position. Kind of like two form C relay contacts with your finger acting as the relay solenoid.

However, you might have illuminated switches for the old or new push buttons, either hand held controller might require being wired to a contactor controller using a different voltage. You may even have different redundant contact ratings for monitor and control signals for some safety interlock. You might require explosion, splash, dust, immersion proof contacts for the pendant controller. You may have even been simply given the wrong pendant controller by somebody briefly confused in the stockroom.

Contact the manufacturer about what you should and do have in your hands. Both the old and new units. Identify what their records say how your crane should be wired with the old pendant and the correct new pendant controller.

Some overhead crane pendants also have high-speed / low-speed buttons. Depress part-way for low speed, depress fully for high speed. This may also explain the extra terminals.

If it were mine, I'd ditch the dangling pendant cable and go wireless. Believe me, they're worth it!

It was an opinion only. Keep it civil.

Show some initiative, man!

You must surely have the model number and make of the crane.

Go on-line, search for the schematic there. Somehow, you managed to find this forum. Use the same skills you used to fine us and SEARCH FOR THE SCHEMATIC.

You have already shot yourself in the foot by wasting time here asking the forum to perform a miracle by telling you how to connect an imaginary control to an imaginary crane motor.

As a last resort, pick up the damn telephone and call them!

Then, get that electrician there to hook it all up for you.

The OP should have asked in the Electrical board.
And I fully agree with the poster above, pendants are a PITA, go wireless, you won't regret it. Usually you keep the existing connector so you can revert back to the pendant if there's a problem with the radio control.
Make sure to chose a robust handheld, also check that the battery doesn't fall off if you drop the remote.
I'd recommend a wireless control with a SIL 3 rated emergency stop, even where not required yet, you'll be on the safe side. Unless the application is special there is no need for higher safety approvals for the other functions and even SIL 3 for the emergency stop is not required in most hoisting applications where you don't lift people in which case special rules apply.
If you really want to keep the wired pendant check carefully the wiring, there are wiring variants with 2-speed buttons if you've such buttons. Unless savvy you'd better ask someone experienced to do it for you, it's a rather simple task.

There is also the possibility that the new pushbuttons are electrically interlocked, whereas the old ones maybe only mechanically.

I am not going to beat you up on this because your only looking for some help here. But, like others have stated you need to find a local company that does work on electrically controlled cranes and have them replace pendent. A lot of things can go every bad when your not knowledgeable in these areas. Cranes are best left to those of us you respect and understand their workings.

Some of the symbols are unclear, but it may be that each pushbutton has a normally closed contact (the middle one shown), a normally open low speed contact, and a normally open high speed contact. Can you verify how each contact behaves as the button is progressively pushed?

In this new pendant, I don't see any mechanical interlocking. Can you verify that?

I don't think you will be able to connect pendant yourself, better call good electrician who can do this job. Otherwise you may connect wrong push buttons which may damage the crane.

Why did you start another topic for the same problem here:

http://cr4.globalspec.com/thread/98206

Indeed your request is quite basic and as others said, if you're not qualified enough let someone experienced do it for you, especially as you even ask about how to wire the emergency stop button.

The first thing would be to check the wiring diagram of the crane (if available and up-to-date). The second one being to check the connection assignation of the pushbuttons. There are lots of wiring variants due to possible 2-speed buttons, electrical interlocks, etc. but basically wiring a pendant is a simple task for someone used to electrical controls; even without any diagram it's not something very complex.
