Quality Comparison of Primary and Secondary Produced Steel Reinforcements

Dear Friends,

As you aware that the Physical and Chemical properties are the major factors in reinforcements for consideration of usage in Building construction. as far as Primary and Secondary steel reinforcement concern that both achieving the similar properties.

The Fact is both are manufactured from two different sources of Raw materials, hence how to distinguish their properties apart from Physical, Chemical, such as any internal structure properties, durability & serviceability. And please share your knowledge to how to "compare the Primary and Secondary produced steel reinforcement Qualitatively".

Analysing both will it be able to conclude the durability of concrete structures, if there is any significant comparison that you may know please share the same.

hence how to distinguish their properties apart from Physical, Chemical, such as any internal structure properties, durability & serviceability.
Spectrograph /XRF PMI included, tensile test(tensile, yield), Charpy test, grain size analysis, DWTT (Drop Weight Tear test), ultrasonic test, and any other offbeat test the codes or the customer requires.

Thanks. Peening is prohibited in some jobs, especially critical welds.

Primary and secondary steels are stages in the production of finished steel. In effect, primary is the crude steel and the secondaries are the refined steels. During this secondary process the various other metals are added to the mix to produce steels meeting the wide array of specifications.

In light of this, your last paragraph doesn't make sense, only finished steels are used to reinforce concrete.

Yes I agree with you, the concept is to identify the best Quality products as they are seems to be similar after finishing. because common acceptance criteria's (Physical & Chemical) are complying for both way's of produced steel,

There would be a difference in Quality of them, I'm trying to figure out the same with the your experiences, and similar scenario that you may come across.

Nope! the concept is to identify the acceptance of the materials to a given set of codes and or standards/requirements.

You misunderstand, primary steel is used only to make secondary steel. Primary steel is not used in structural work, only finished secondary steel

As a rough analogy, think of crude oil as the primary going into the refinery and the refined products, lubricating oil, gasoline etc. coming out of the refinery as the secondary.

Primary steel making - Carbon and phosphorous removal is the main objective

{Bessemer process, Open hearth process,BOF (Basic Oxygen Furnace), EAF(Electric Arc Furnace) are used for primary steel making}

Secondary Steel Making - Laddle Refining & Vaccum degassing processes are used for alloy control, hydrogen removal, inclusion control etc.

For detailed experience:- Refer The making, shaping and treating of steel book by AISE Steel Foundation.

Probably, in your line of work, corrosion resistance is one of the key factors, especially when tested against chloride stress cracking, oxide production, and general failure.

Usually this is done by ASTM test protocols for corrosion resistance. Another useful tool is some sort of quantitative elemental analysis that covers ALL the elements in the sample, not just what a PMI gun can detect. There are a number of options, all of which are expensive, and somewhat tough to implement at times.

In the US, reinforcement steel features "Mill Marks" embedded into the surface of the bars to distinguish the ASTM steel grade and Yield Strength. That helps one to determine if the rebar is the correct one that's denoted in the Contract Documents at specific locations.
