You also need to give some idea of how much water and how much rust there is in it. Where is the rust coming from, and how long is that piece of equipment expected to survive?

Nobody said anything about removing the attached accumulated particles. Nobody said anything about the nominal particulate size, concentration level before or after electromagnetic separation, flow rate, volume, potability or anything that might agree or disagree with how to separate hematite sands from gold flake.

Just watch the Discovery Channel show, Gold Rush. The gold is separated from dirt essentially by its density. Hematite sand particles and other ferrous debris are pulled from the final golden dust pile using a hand held magnet. As my comment mentioned, we know nothing about any of the relevant details why they want an electromagnet for particle separation.

I have watched Gold Rush, and am an ardent admirer of the show, and the men who go out there and mine it! What a great bunch of people they are! I am amazed they were actually having problems with clays clinging to the stones, and holding up gold from the wash, and the fix was just more higher velocity water. It might still be tempting to go back and check some of the gravel piles and tailings, then do a "super wash" with recycling of the water with a clay peptizing agent in it. But then the wastewater would have to be cut down to nothing.

I am willing to wager that $100 worth of peptizing agent might yield $50,000 in gold or even a lot more, since it would recycle.

It also matters how pure the water is supposed to be afterwards and if soluable iron salts could be a problem?

I think you can get magnets mounted on pipe plugs, and then alter your piping to include several threaded connections.

1. Why do you want to remove the iron particulates?
2. How much water?
3. Is the water moving or in a still well?
4. Do you need to collect the particulates?

A little more information is always helpful!
