Good Two Part Epoxy Resin

02/03/2015 8:53 PM

Who manufactures or sells a good two part epoxy resin for high temperature applications (450 to 600 degrees) that is compatible for use with bonding carbin fiber materials?

Re: INFO

WHO KNOWS?

It's "carbon" fibers.

You don't say if it is 400 TO 600° F or C.

As bigg said, google some manufacturers and ASK THEM.

Or, ask the fiber makers what they would use.

What, you don't have any fibers in your carbine?

Actually it you take carbine up to 600C in the presence of O or O2 you will likely get something like your picture Bob. :~)

You're new here.

Using ALL CAPS is the same as shouting.

Try searching first.

Read the FAQ's and the Rules for Posting.

Look at this, ↓ there's plenty more, if you look for them.

DOW Epoxy Novolac resin - The Dow Chemical Company

Talk to materials suppliers. They KNOW.

You could search for epoxy resins or adhesives on Engineering360 using the SpecSearch forms, but you will have to register or login on Engineering360 in order to view the SpecSearch results. The Epoxy Adhesives and Laminating Adhesives and Composite Resins would be good categories to look at first.

Try this Epoxy Adhesives saved SpecSearch with two component and Use Temp >450 F selected

Again here is a Laminating Adhesives and Composite Resins saved SpecSearch with Epoxy and Use Temp >450 F selected

You can select additional criteria during search to narrow your results. Other resins systems might be suitable for your application. Carbon fiber is not an option on the search form, so you will have to look at the datasheets for various suppliers products.

J-B Weld - hands down - can be used to 'heal' a cracked engine block.

In general I don't like J-B Weld--at least not the ones seen in the general stores. All I have seen are black, which I dislike because there is no way to hide the repair. When I had them, I had good luck with Devcon products, but I'm not at all aware of their current product line. Try them and see what they have.

There is also a website, www.thistothat.com, but I haven't used it for a long time--don't know if it will handle high temps.

Hi Aelzer,

Have you tried technical@ but also tell them whether you want 600C or F. They have been helpful with high temp epoxies to us in the past.

Henkel, the manufacturer of loctite, makes two part epoxy resins for most applications. I have used some of their products in the past, (can't remember the exact model number) up to 300°F.

I've found that Henkel(loctite) has an adhesive for just about anything, high temp, low temp, thermal cycling are just a few. A search of their website should give the OP a hit on something available.

To my knowledge Master Bond in US (I think is supported by NASA) could be contacted.

www.masterbond.com/ They will respond, but I doubt whether you will get anything at this high temperature. I myself was in touch with them for developing an adhesive at 140 Deg C. But did not get a suitable response for my application.

Devcon makes a broad line of epoxies for many applications. Check out their website.

If you are looking to bond at 600C I would recommend you look at products by

http://www.cotronics.com/vo/cotr/

Also, "carbon" fiber will burn at 600C if there is oxygen present.

BTW, if you are in Minnesota, in the winter, and the wind is blowing hard enough, it is always "f" in degrees.

You may want to check with a company called Aremco. They specialized in high temp. adhesive products including epoxies. For std. and custom adhesives, and dispensing equipment, etc. try Hernon Mfg. Good luck!

This whole thread is useless.

We don't even know if it's °F or °C we dealing with. I think we can assume it's not °K.

2 part epoxy formulations typically do not yield a high glass transition temperature. Epoxy formulations that are able to handle the high use temperatures are almost always cured at high temperatures for a long time 1 to 3 hours. Be careful with 2 part epoxy formulations that boast about high temp applications. The glass transition temperature (temperature where useful strength exists) might actually be low. Look for Tg (glass transition temperature) measured by a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) Ask for the "Onset Temperature" where the adhesive begins to lose modulus, and the Tg (tan delta). Tg measured by DSC is not as accurate and does not have the capability of measuring modulus.

Also, There are many one component epoxy systems. The curative is already mixed in but does not "activate" until heated.

Make sure the adhesive you pick is rated for continuous use at X temperature if your part will be exposed to high temperatures for long periods of time.

Keep in mind that the higher the temperature rating, the lower the toughness (more brittle) There are some exceptions but the downside will be cost and/or strength (modulus)

Re: Good Two Part Epoxy Resin

Good Question . 400 to 600 F or C ? Lets start with 525 degrees Celcius , the cylinder head temperature of a running Continental six cylinder aircraft piston engine . Hot . Now , I will assume that your requirement for a two part ( room temperature cure or oven baked ?) strong ( structural ? ) epoxy , to bond carbon fibre together has hidden problems not associated with shop type hand layup marine builds , otherwise you would have asked any fiberglass shop which routinely works in CF fabric what they use , wouldn't you ? West System or System 3 - 2 part resin- works the same on CF fabric as it does on woven glass strands ( fibreglass matrix ) . Heat proofing is another story , there are fireproof resins , fire resistant 2 parts , as there are fire resistant room temperature cure silicon adhesives , designed for uses near hot engines , or to vapour seal marine engine enclosures , and not burn away . CascoPhen , a PRF product made by Chempoint U.S.A. is a good 2 part epoxy . It is structural , it is a room temperature set thermosetting resin , it is impervious to most chemicals and fuel , including gasoline , it is waterproof . There are myriad epoxies and silicon based matrixes , polymers , and good old West System marine 2 part . Permatex High Temp Gasket Silicon is a pliable high temp adhesive , expensive , but probably not good for covering an area of CF Fabric , it is designed to be used as a gasket cement , and doesn't work as a resin matrix for bonding carbofibre , but the High Temp Permatex is an excellent heat resistant sealant for applications where extreme is expected , like around a 525 degree C cylinder head . Hope this helps .
