Apparently it does not matter as the price of fuel at the pump is going up while the price of crude is still going down.

Depends on the timeframe you're looking at....Looks like it's tracking the price of crude move for move....

Interesting graph.

In my neck of the world gasoline has risen from $1.89 to $2.39 in the last 2 weeks and just North of here the price has jumped up to $2.49 to $2.69 depending on which station along I40 you stop at.

It is interesting that the pump prices dribble down slowly but race back up quickly for the same rate of change in crude prices.

What is even more puzzling to me is why diesel prices are higher than gasoline given that the processing cost is much lower.

I was hearing a piece on NPR the other day about the strikes by dock workers affecting the movement of goods out of port on the left coast.

Not sure how that plays into Northwest Arizona, but I suspect there may be a bottleneck in transporation of goods right now, but the refineries are not at the docks, so ????

The gossip outside USA is that some (non US) suppliers are driving prices down in response to US development of "self sufficiency" initiatives so that your local suppliers withdraw from the market and close the US reserves again.

Countries that follow world parity pricing are seeing some price relief, but not in proportion to the published world price.

I totally agree with this analogy.

This is not the first time it has happened and if we do not stabilize and control our energy system, we will suffer greatly in the very near future.

Nothing can be more detrimental to a nation's economy than unstable energy supplies and escalating, uncontrolled costs.

Sounds like an episode with J.R. Ewing played by Larry Hagman on the old TV sitcom from the 70's called 'Dallas'

For those with money to invest, now is the time to buy.

Current prices are insane, so are interest rates, and it's going to be a lot more than a 'dead cat bounce'.

Don't bother unless you can afford to be in the investing game for 3 years, and bail when you've doubled your money.

Lacking funds to do so, I'll sit back and run a ghost portfolio.

The only problem is which bank you trust to keep hold of your money. We are still in a sub-prime lending system - it's all about shifting money fast.

The whole thing is revolting, but watch and see. I can't breifly/easily justify those points, but revist here in even just one years time. Prices for many commodities are at there lowest for several decades, energy in paticular is going to bounce.

This is not an economic forum, so I'm leaving this chat now. It's valid enough, but not why I visit here (for now).

I was keeping an eye on it, and it seems that big oil reacted pretty fast to keep the stock price at the level.

A lot I believe they tighten up on hiring as well as existing employees. And they were very quick to do so.

Where there is a place to invest is the support companies that support Big Oil's internal and external infrastructure.

But this isn't for the faint of heart.

The company I work for has already shut down several of our oil fields and offshore rigs along with laying off a large number of personnel and curtailing refinery production.

We are also getting rid of as many outside contractors as possible.

It's not good.

if there isn't a major issue or crisis because of fracking. environmental that is.

now, one has to just define what is major.

Hate to admit it, but you are on the ball.

Fracking, Shale, whatever, this will end bad. If somebody ends up richer, then somebody end up poorer . It' our nature.

You never let a serious crisis go to waste.

My Girlfriends youngest daughter just graduated with B.sC in Geology and Environmental sciences.

She was pretty excited, Last summer/fall, Halliburton was going to fly her down to Texas for interviews after she graduated. The contact of hers there, told her everyone she recommended was hired.

In September, I told her, better develop a plan 'B'. Now she's hoofing it and looking for anything...... (She worked in a front office of an apartment complex)

On some of the IT contractors for big oil. I started buying stock, and the price keeps going down. I'm positioning myself to buy, but I have to wait for some more info to decide to buy either before or after they release their numbers for this next quarter.

It looks like after they release their next quarterly report.

Very true about support companies. When I was playing back in the 80's, if prices hit a critical level then demand for OCTG and all the other stuff would drop within literally minutes. A real bummer if you've lined up a deal for umpteen foot of casing. Profit or loss was a knife edge. To this day I don't understand why the major comapanies didn't take a long term economic approach, the cost of stop/start must have outweighed absorbing the fluctuations. Evidently not in the minds of their financial experts. They were probaly correct, but it's a mind bend if ones only interest is the tech aspects.

I watch with detached interest. I've got a vehicle that gets 19mpg, one at 31mpg and one at 100 mpg. Oh, and one that gets about 100 miles/pound of food. I guess if gas tops $5/gallon, I'll ride the scooter/bicycle even in Winter. :)

I read an article in a trade journal that was very lengthy and full of charts, graphs and big words came down to summarize that even if crude cost a Penney a barrel, politicians would tack on an equivalent amount of taxes that would be earmarked for highway infrastructure but are usually diverted toward luxury junkets and playboy bunny parties.

A useful point only in casual conversation. Efforts to raise gas taxes are already underway, given the low prices and dire need. They are difficult. Politicians do NOT like raising taxes.
