User Group Request: Project Engineering/Management

02/26/2015 9:59 AM

I would like to propose a new User Group: Project Engineering/Management.

Often times technical professionals grow into acquiring additional responsibilities as Project Engineers, and often function as Project Managers. For those that have made this transition, they soon realize that Project Engineering/Management requires a whole different skill set (many of which are soft skills) but often receive no formal training and have to learn them through trial and error.

I think a Project Engineering/Management identification badge will assist CR4 members in locating other members that have made the transition and can provide guidance, tutelage, and perspective.

Regards,

JavaHead

This sounds like a good idea to me.

It can help to draw together the individuals growing in this area and those dealing with issues needing answers or directions.

Let's launch it.

Excellent idea. This area is increasing all the time.

The is formal training that offers BsC or MsC for project management at accredited colleges and well prepares for your PMP or PgMP certifications for project management which surprises some people.

Just being me but, I don't see the need for another user group. That's what titles in each section are for.

Besides, why not post it here: What Would You Like to See? That's the purpose of that thread. New proposals.

Sorry, but I thought that thread was for forum functionality; but good idea... and it would be scary if you were anyone else but you ;-)

In regards to User Groups - I went looking to see which ones we had... here:

http://cr4.globalspec.com/browse/allgroups

Didn't find what I was looking for, so followed a link to... here:

http://cr4.globalspec.com/browse/showgrouprequests

Didn't see one for the group I was looking for, so followed the "Submit a User Group Request" link - which created this thread and put it here automatically ;-)

I can create a user group easily enough... and I think this is a great suggestion.

Any ideas for the badge image?

don't know if this is copyright.

After thinking about it, there may have to recruit members to join.

I seem to be having difficulty posting images to the site; please excuse the delay whilst I figure it out... note, I also can't post emoticons or hyperlinks using the forum tools, either.

That's a known bug... I'm hoping it will be fixed soon!

If you just want to share an idea of what you have in mind, or a link to something similar, that'd be great.

Re: User Group Request: Project Engineering/Management

So my thoughts are first a couple options to see what others think. With Project Management being a very broad field, covering all disciplines; it's hard to come up with a single image to represent the totality of it, so I thought I'd deconstruct:

First, I have a pretty simple image of just the letters 'P' and 'M' inside a square with some gradient shading that would translate really well into a small badge image. I still can't attach, but maybe I'll try to attach to a private message; at a minimum I'll just send you my e-mail address.

Second, some images that may translate well to a small badge, albeit somewhat plane:

PM Process Groups

We could choose a graphical representation of the 5 main Project Management Process Groups (Initiating, Planning, Executing, Monitoring, Closing) and their interaction throughout the Project Life Cycle: basically represented at:

http://flylib.com/books/en/2.466.1.51/1/

Similar to what Phoenix911 suggested, just not as colorful ;-)

Or even the center image on your own article:

http://www.globalspec.com/learnmore/business_services/project_management_services

PM Knowledge Areas

We could choose a graphical representation of the 10 Knowledge Areas (Integration, Scope, Time, Cost, Quality, HR, Communications, Risk, Procurement, Stakeholder) something like:

http://p3acorp.com/blog-entry/new-blog-series-the-management-of-small-projects/

Or, a little less that halfway down the article at:

http://www.brighthubpm.com/certification/128102-what-new-in-pmbok-5/

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Second, some graphical ideas that present well:

I like how the top image at:

http://www.engineering.leeds.ac.uk/civil/postgraduate/masters-engineering-project-management/

presents... it has some nice elements.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Or, I like the hand holding the sphere at:

http://en.trend.az/business/economy/2309291.html

or the close-up that is 3 images over.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

I like the word-play approach in the image of the top of:

http://www.professionaldude.com/?project-management-organizational-structures-paper,31

And this is used a lot, all over the place, so I doubt their are copyright issues. Just not sure how it would translate to a small badge.

It will not let the join request go through unless a Membership Type is selected; and there are none. ;-)
