Additive Plus Subtractive Manufacturing

03/08/2015 6:38 PM

Amazing that someone didn't think of this sooner.

Building up of shafts via molten metal powder has been around a long time, only now

they are using it in 3D printing, coupled with a 5 axis milling machine.

This video is absolutely hynoptizing.

I'm sure the thought has been there, it's just waiting for technology to catch up.

Metal spraying has been around for awhile. Electric motor re-builders have been doing this for years.

Spraying exotic metals is just coming into its own, which seems to me to be what the laser deposition is doing.

What's to keep you from using a stock extrusion or shape and adding to it then machine it to net shape?

Lyn, they have been doing metal additive process for quite a few years now. For rare or hard to find engine blocks they have a process to add back what has been machined out or worn , as well it is a harder material as a replacement. Plus crankshafts have had a form of this process recently instead of welding or hard chrome to allow for the offset grinding for stroker cranks to make larger displacement engines. And to allow testing of the cranks after use as hard-chrome won't allow x-ray testing after being done that way.

Shouldn't that be Additive Minus Subtractive?

Is that an algebraic or spinning question?

Our 3D ModelMaker is a combo additive / subtractive, multi access system with the ability to place active and passive components in a printed circuit BLOCK (vs a 2D board), where the block is built up with conductive and insulating printed materials.

The use of the 2 placement tables adds to the speed of production.

The tables also tilt, rotate, rise, fall and slide forward and reverse plus left and right for another 5 degrees of freedom. If you are going to get into 3D printing .... well just do it!

The system was recognised in the 2014 Australia Zenith Process and Control Engineering Awards, admittedly only with a 'Finalist' status. The officials keep raising the bar!
