You do realise that if Cavaliers weren't so awful, the joke wouldn't be nearly so funny, don't you?

Isn't that kind of the point?

It's not very nationalistic, though, is it?

Seems that I read somewhere that the chief designer on the Cavalier project was a former Citroën employee.

Just as a matter of interest.

If you copy and paste that address, and then add #t=1980 at the end, you will still get the ad but the video will then go straight to the 33 minute mark.

GA!

I wouldn't watch 32 minutes of any TV show, just to see a joke! ...but then I rarely watch TV at all. It would have to be a really interesting show to keep me watching for 33 minutes.

There's a good chance that I'm a bit too cavalier on this topic.

The difference being that you don't have to wait for it all to load if you want to see something near the end as in that clip.

The #t method negates this wait and the video starts at the selected point, which also saves download data.

Perhaps Cavaliers are just unlucky to be the butt of jokes. I went to the clip but my hearing in the speech range is so poor that I cannot make out what is said.

If it is a short joke, can someone paraphrase it here please.

Back in the old days in the UK it was Skoda that was the butt of jokes.

For instance, I lent my lawn mower to my neighbour, but when it was returned, it did not work. My neighbour had takens bits off to mend his Skoda.

Or, banger for sale, worn tyres, leaking radiator, burning oil, flat battery, lumpy ignition, cracked windscreen....good for spares but could suit Skoda driver moving up-market.

Sorry Skoda, but old memories linger. Personally I found them extremely good value for money in those days. The main dealers had nothing to compete on real value, so they set out on a campaign to ridicule the cars - regretfully with some success.

But not today.

At one time the Yugo was considered the worst car ever sold in the US.

This article sums up the national opinion nicely, and even includes respect for the car's rear window defroster :

they were suppose to trade cars, the Buick for the Cavalier. the guy in the Buick just gave it to him, no trade, he said you're probably the only man in America with one that actually still runs. so even the Hot Rod guys know the reputation these cars have earned.

Our memory is so short term. I think there were much worse cars sold in the US than the Cavalier.

Hyundai Excel

Kia Sephia

Chevy Vega

Ford Pinto

Chevy Chevette

Chevy Citation

Yugo

AMC/Renault Alliance

Pontiac LeMans (late 80's)

Daewoo (all of them)

Dihatsu (all of them)

Dodge Monaco (mid 80's)

Cadillac Catera

You are lucky you didn't have to endure British Leyland cars.

The British Ford Escort and Cortina (did you have them in the US?) were tough and went and went.....

So did the Ford Pintos (and Mercury Comets, Merkurs and Xr4Tis). They were economical and unless hit from behind soldiered on for hundreds of thousands of miles. After they were no longer roadworthy they could become dirt track racers and pullers.
