Plans for the World's Tallest Wooden Building

Posted August 25, 2009 8:24 AM

From Neatorama:

Norway plans to construct a wooden building 16-17 stories tall with carbon neutral construction techniques. The Norwegian Barents Secretariat will use it for a cultural center for the nation's northern coast. It will house a library, a theatre, and art studios in its approximately 10,000 square meter interior space and will highlight sustainable development.

Carbon neutral? That sucker's gonna release plenty of C02 when it burns down.

My friend, I have to inform you that 99.99% of all buildings including housing in Norway are constructed from wood, and 99.99% of them have never burnt down!!Spencer.

Just cut down the forest, this is carbon neutral technology.

Dumb asses.

I think that the forest needed for that "thing" would have absorbed all of the carbon in one year if the building should be built from concrete and steel.

Hi all,

I say excuse me I said excuse me,..................... This carbon neutral thing. Who thinks this is just a 'spin name' for two words, one of which start with 'B' with one of these '-' between, and end in 't'?

I mean, come on, if the trees plant and harvest themselves then they could perhaps be said to be 'Carbon Neutral". They do not and cannot, and the people who plant then use huge machines which definitely are NOT carbon neutral. They are planted by huge machines............

And even if it was all done by people, do these people not have to be fed? And with no vehicles or cranes, screws, nails, metal, glass, pumped water, cement, concrete, etc Are or they growing a 'salad crop' in carbon neutral greenhouses ready for the tree harvest? How ridiculous. bb

if the trees plant and harvest themselves .

That's exactly what they do if we leave 'em alone...they seed themselves with help from Squirrels and suchlike (so that's what Kris gets up to), and they fall down or get blown over...then I pick 'em up and turn 'em into bows.

Hello Del,

Hope you are your Bowering? Is that a word?????? Are doing fine?

Yes I have not heard from Kris for a couple of weeks, still, he's probably playing with his nuts right? Remember, all it the mind!.............

Yeah I know what you mean about tree self seeding and growing till they drop Kind of, but that would not be nearly predictable enough to rely on a given M³ which the industry needs each year. Actually a friend planted 5 acres (2.5 Hectares) of trees in her garden, for building and fencing, and harvested them 10 years later, so I know it worked for them. But the machines which planted the second 5 acres were not exactly small. They had pine last time, this time to try and get the ground in a better condition, they planted natural british hardwoods............

I almost got carried away there sorry!

Take care my friend.............

Keep those arrows straight OK?

Hi, I'm ok...it's everyone else that's the problem, Parents and Kids eh? Nothin' but trouble the lot of 'em .
I'll start my next bow in a month or so, a Yew Longbow.
I've got some interesting jobs on, making a 'donations' box and repairing a couple of wooden sculptures, for a local garden (The Gibberd Garden).
Actually a friend planted 5 acres (2.5 Hectares) of trees in her garden .
Wow that's some 'garden'
Have fun, stay cool.

IT seems to me that structural bamboo would be a smarter way to go rather than using wood. Its is considerably stronger than wood and is a faster growth for replacement than trees.

ya I don't think they make green houses that tall so importing would be required.
