Toyota Developing Anti-Drunk Driving Gadget

Posted August 31, 2009 8:29 AM

From Yahoo! News: Personal Technology:

Toyota Motor said Monday it was developing anti-drunk driving equipment that would lock the ignition of a vehicle if high levels of alcohol are detected in the driver. The system features a hand-held breathalyser, equipped with a digital camera, that detects alcohol consumption and photographs the driver's face for identification, a company statement said.

After reading the entire article, I'm guessing the government will make it illegal for anyone to tamper or disable such a device. I know many would not like this invasion of their right to drive and would seek ways of disabling it if mandated on new vehicles. I know what you are going to say; "driving is not a right, but a privilege". From a government's perspective, it's a privilege, but I'm not in the government.

As long as you drive on your own property, it's your right. As soon as you turn onto a public lane, it's a privilege.

The roads don't belong to the government, of which you are not a part, but to the public, of which you are. The public pays for them, and the public elects legislators to enact laws to regulate their use for the public good.

Pretty good idea - just not sure how well it will work unless is mandated for all vehicles. Drunk driving deaths (about 20K/year in the USA if I recall) would be greatly reduced if there was no practical way to bypass it. I don't believe those who know they drive after drinking will add it as an option especially if they had to pay for.

Saw a recent commercial for Mercedes Benz that warns and corrects for in-attendant or drowsy drivers. How about jammers for cell phones to prevent calls or texting. They would all be good. Too many die because others don't take the full responsibility and treat driving with the respect it deserves.

Have you seen the TV commercial for Volvo's car that brakes automatically if the car in front suddenly stops and you don't respond? I wonder how many drivers would purposely not brake just to see if the automatic brake works.

Some would, no doubt, but probably not more than once!

Ronseto

Sounds possible for someone who falls asleep or is distracted on a dry day, but how would it know if a "swerve to avoid" maneuver is not the best response? If it jammed on the breaks (even with ABS) you could loose control and slam into the other car/object when a swerve might have avoided the crash.
