Speed Limit Sign Displays Days In Hospital Based On Your Car Speed

Posted September 04, 2009 10:06 AM

From Gizmodo:

These 25mph speed limit signs are equipped with a speed radar and a number display. Nothing strange about that, really. Until you notice that the billboard displays horrible figures—like days in hospital or crash bills—based on your speed. I don't know how it calculates the numbers. Maybe it's just a speed display, maybe it uses some logic to come up with the accident bills costs or the chance of a crash. I do know, however, that people respond to fear more than to fines. 46 days in the hospital won't be fun at all, so grab your steering wheel with both hands, and please drive safely.

What a stupid waste of time. What's next? A digital display on a cigarette pack that tells you how many days you have to live based on the number of cigarettes you smoke?

With the advent of OLED flexible displays, we will soon be observing digital displays on just about everything.

You all have seen (and heard) the greeting cards that play music and such. Next, is one that plays a music video or a personalized video message. Or, how about a baseball cap that displays a moving display of your favorite team. The possibilities are endless.

tropicalspeed,

Your correct, these things are coming. So many advertisers just loved the barrage of advertising images that assaulted the future citizens found in Blade Runner. But just like the reason for this speed display sign to change its message for more impact. We will just become gradually immune to any message.

I agree that, I for one, have become immune to the barrage of adverts. The trick is to make the sign as eye-catching as possible. I've seen billboards in Atlantic City that are constructed of LEDs. They are animated and change their ad periodically. Kind of hard to ignore these.

And there lies one of the paradoxes of flashing safety street signs. Do you really want to drive to distraction somebody who is speeding?

At least it's somewhat creative...well...sort of...ok, ok, it's stupid. But not as stupid as the speed display, really, it would be a wonderful thing except in nearly every auto there is this little 'speedometer' thing that gives you the exact same info.

Out of curiosity, was that hospital days with the US healthcare system now, or when Barrycare 2.0 takes over? Any guesses?

The chances of getting in an accident increase as people driving past the sign strive to see what it says.
