Driving on Glass? Inventor Hopes to Lay Down Solar Roads

Posted October 08, 2009 9:10 AM

From Scientific American:

A truck tire supporting a 36,300-kilogram load repeatedly traverses an 18-meter stretch of road, day in and day out, rolling up 483,000 kilometers on the odometer at the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DoT) testing facility in Virginia. The goal is to thoroughly challenge any new paving techniques and see how the road surface holds up. Now imagine putting a solar panel under there.

What a waste of (my tax dollars) money. If it's not cost effective to put PV's on our rooftops, how can it ever be a good idea to drive on them?

The energy cost of processing glass is not trivial. Certainly much more than bitumus asphalt. Grip is another thing. Anyone who has ridden a motorcycle is keenly aware of the limited traction you get on painted or steel surfaces especially when wet. The practice of adding glass micro-beads to painted lines to improve nightime visibility make them even more treacherous to single-track vehicles.

With the amount of traffic - and non-moving traffic - the road would never see the light of day!
