Do Cell Phones Cause Cancer?

Posted October 09, 2009 8:10 AM

Some — the National Cancer Institute, U.S. Congress, and more — do think more studies should be conducted to determine whether cell phones are related to brain tumors, according to a recent Business Week article. Those of the opinion "better to err on the side of caution" limit cell phone use and take precautions like using headsets and speaker phones. Should longer term studies be done?

Cancer or not, they do cause considerable annoyance when used inappropriately.

There is plenty of evidence around that cell phones can cause brain tumors. Its pretty easy to get ahold of that information in lots of places. I try to limit my use.

My guess: just a little. Almost certainly less than dental x-rays and other sources most of us accept as worthwhile in moderation. But thinking about this does remind me that when I see people taking phones out of their pocket while they sit down, they may be doing a healthy thing, not just showing off their fancy phones.

What entertains me is that the power level of the radio waves in cell phones transmitting to distant cell towers is much much higher than the energy from satellites, power lines, microwave ovens, bluetooth headsets, wifi routers, and other things that scare the beejeezus out of the tin foil hat crowd.

They have caused tumors behind the ears I have read some time ago. Cancer I do not know of any cases.
