Freshwater Tissue, California's last chlorine- and dioxin-free pulp mill, and an exemplary model of responsible and environmentally sound manufacturing will soon permanently close because of lack of funds due to the banking industry collapse. It used disease-laden and fire-hazard tanoak trees for feedstock. But at the same time, large polluting mills in China and elsewhere are being brought online in order to supply U.S. consumers. And, why did the federal government offer $55m for experimental clean coal technologies, but not a penny for this proven chlorine-free pulp mill?
