Exclusive SpaceShipTwo unveiling gallery (Updated!)

From Boing Boing:

The world's first commercial spacecraft was officially unveiled on Monday afternoon.Photos shot for Boing Boing by Alan Radecki, photographer and Mojave aviation and space historian. The craft will take six tourists at a time to the edge of space. Each seat is $200,000, requires the traveler to pass a strenuous physical, and offers just a few minutes of zero-G flight. The Mojave desert is home to Virgin Galactic's research and development base. Its commercial spaceport is to be built in New Mexico. Entrepreneur Richard Branson and engineer Burt Rutan's dream is to kickstart private space exploration. Test flights will begin almost immediately. Earlier in the day, an ice-sculptor's work reflects similarly cold conditions two hours east of L.A., lashed by heavy rains before the unveiling. Journalists gathered for the event, bussed out on coaches to what one correspondent described as a "goat rodeo." Guests were evacuated early from the event due to wind advisory, Radecki said ... "Current winds, 53, gusting to 60!" California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and New Mexico governor Bill Richardson were among the attendees. The "badminton cock" design allows SpaceShipTwo to re-enter the atmosphere as slower speeds than the Shuttle, producing less heat. Branson, Rutan and their families will get to enjoy the first official journey into space. There's already a huge list of reservations for the twice-daily flights thereafter.

A bit like SCUBA diving, skiing or parachuting. The risk is part of the fun.

The White Star Line didn't go out of business after the Titanic. (Well, it eventually did, but that was due to the development of the airliner.)

Hello bhankiii:

When the Titanic sunk...on its maiden voyage yet, nice comparison, the steam ships have already been traveling across the Atlantic with a over 1,000 passengers plus 800 complementary crew.

• Passengers - Fully Loaded: (Titanic wasn't)

739 First Class, 674 Second Class, and 1,026 Third Class (Steerage) April 14th: 329 First Class, 285 Second Class, and 710 Third Class (Steerage).
• Crew – 892 / Officers (not including Captain) - 7

It also had 2 sister ships under construction.

Now, with SpaceShipTwo, carrying a how many passages, and how many 3rd class....or even second class....or wait thats really not P.C. to say. So let say its passengers are quite affluent. And if there was a disaster on its maiden voyage, it would be 0 for 1. period. Yes I realize it was the same with the airplane before Orville and Wilbur got it wrong. But this is a business started right out from the gates.

I do understand that the maiden voyage will be with the Branson as well as the designers families.

I am sure that some of these passenger would still want drop money to go and to try it for what ever reason, no meaning in their lives and looking for that next rush or recognition.

Well God bless them.

I myself hope things go well, but bhankiii you of all people know the complexity of what can go wrong. And it is just a matter of time. ( though I do like the ideas they have on reentry.)

I also realize we need these people like Branson as well as the people that buy those tickets to support his venture, for our future. Because I believe our future may depend on what they are doing today.

I, speaking as a designer do not feel we should get complacent and expect things to go well. An attitude that has serve me well when it comes to not only producing bot more important performance of the designs.

I liken it to a mountain climbing or scuba diving vacation, or maybe hot air ballooning or race car driving. It's not for the squeamish, for sure.

mountain climbing or scuba diving vacation, or maybe hot air ballooning or race car driving.

Thats probably how one should look at it. I won't go as far as to call it a sport, but I would call it entertainment.

I just hope (damn pessimist) that if...or when something happens the government doesn't step in due to the public out cry (why its not there money Branson is spending) and make it fiscally impossible to carry on.
