DIY Jet Almost Ready to Fly

Posted January 06, 2010 8:50 AM

From Wired Top Stories:

Boeing has dominated aviation headlines lately, but for those of us who dream of flying our own jet, help is on the way. While the 787 flew for the first time, a much smaller company was busy testing a much smaller jet of its own. The SubSonex is a small, single-seat jet designed to provide high performance in an airplane that fits in your garage. Of course, there is some assembly required. But that, and the $60,000 price tag, is a small price to pay for the thrill of a lifetime.

That single and small power plant does not look encouraging

BEDE Aircraft has somethings similar based off their BD-5

Go Sonnex...... they have been putting out great kits based on that design for many years. Wonderful little planes. I'd love that unit strapped to their motorglider version of the Sonnorai (Think that's what they called it). Imagine, turbine reliability, quick launch, shut down motor and spend 4 or 5 hours gliding in blissfull silence. Johannesburg to Capetown on 10gal of fuel, Newyork to Florida Keys on say 30 gals in a jet that glided most of the way...... with the right weather you would do it at about 75mph strait line. Or just fire up the jet and wack it at a gentle 240mph. Sure sounds better than an SUV on the Interstate.....at the same price. Wow

PS I don't mind putting my backside in a bucket of rivets that I knocked together myself.....done it, got the t-shirt!

Also believe that this represent a part of the future : Sonex is getting to be a relatively proven design (as far as homebuilding goes : No Sonex with 10s of thousands of hours). The use of a small LIGHT turbine sounds really interesting, not discounting the pleasure related to the actual sound of the device.
