Facebook CEO: People Don't Really Want Privacy Nowadays, Anyway

Posted January 13, 2010 8:52 AM

From Discover Magazine | rsslist:

There's nothing like the launching a company from your college dorm room that achieves global Internet hegemony within a few years to make you think you can offer royal pronouncements about how the world has changed. OK, so that was a bit melodramatic. But Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg earned some howls and guffaws in the last few days over his statements saying that, in a nutshell, people aren't terribly interested in privacy anymore.

I know some people will totally disagree with that statement but it's true for me.

I have nothing to hide, my facebook profile is open to the public. I'm not ashamed of who I am and it makes me wonder what privacy freaks are really hiding!

"I have nothing to hide"

I totally agree with you, but I don't want any authoritarian nose sticking itself into places that it constitutionally doesn't have a right to be.

Despite having nothing to hide, failing to protect those rights is the surest way to loose them.

I've been trying to get better at using digital photographs more fully. Other day I thought I'd try and put together a photo album on Facebook.

So I start at it and this notice comes up saying something to the effect that to do this I need to give complete access to my computer to them.

I didn't feel like doing that, so no photo album.

If my privacy is so unimportant, why do they want to have it?

Or a better way of phrasing that is to ask, "How come you want all my secrets?"

How'd you like it if I came over to your house, walked in and sat down at your desk and started looking through all your bills, started reading all your letters, went in the bedroom and looked under the bed, opened the drawers on the bedside table? How about I go in the bathroom and check out what prescriptions you've got?

How about I come by your house at night while your screwing your wife, and look through the window and watch? - Just curious you know, you don't mind do you?

Mr. Zuckerberg has obviously never been in the witness protection program.

"I have nothing to hide"

No? Then how about setting up a webcam in your bedroom? How about publishing your index.dat file?

My facebook is also open to the public - but it's such a cramped interface I rarely post anything of significance there, if I want to really say something I'll put it in my blog where I have enough space to express actual thoughts and ideas.

Claiming to have nothing to hide is rather a moot point, since just about anyone can find out virtually anything they want to know about you from a variety of existing sources. Privacy is an illusion. What makes me nervous are the Powers that Be inventing stories about me that are not true so they can justify persecuting me...

If I wanted to live in a goldfish bowl, I would be a goldfish!! Some of us don't want our "15 minutes of fame".
