Space Shuttles for Sale

Posted January 18, 2010 9:53 AM

From New Scientist - Online News:

Space shuttle for sale, fully loaded, air conditioning, one careful owner. It's the ultimate bargain. NASA has cut the price of a space shuttle to $28.8 million. The vehicles will go on sale after they finish constructing the International Space Station, scheduled to be later this year. The New York Times reports that NASA had hoped to get $42 million for each vehicle but lowered the cost in the hope of sealing a deal. It has three to sell, although one of these, Discovery, is already promised to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC. If an entire shuttle is beyond your budget, consider a main engine instead. NASA had hoped to charge up to $800,000 for these but lack of interest has forced it to slash the price. They are now available for free: a bargain in anybody's language. Just bear in mind that the buyer must pay for postage and packaging.

a regular fire sale, uh.........and if you seal the deal, and NASA can't deliver because oh lets say.....a major malfunction....during lift-off or reentry/landing.

Too bad Micheal Jackson isn't around, that would have went well on his ranch.

I read they are going to turn "Neverland Ranch" into a tourist attraction/theme park, so you never know!

Wow, what a junk-yard toy a shuttle would make. I could play plenty with that pile of ........you know what! Just think, you could even find just the right pieces to re-invent the mouse trap! Jokes aside it would be a good one for recycling titanium and high grade ally alloys, and I would guess, (must be noted exactly how much, somewhere) a pound or two of gold in foils and contacts. And a couple of really neat sets of hydraulics..... Darn, I confess, I am a junk collector of note.....

Actually I would suggest that one be put on display in front of the IRS Head office alongside a copy of Uncle Burt's Starship One, just to remind government daily how much cash they waste on politically motivated programs as opposed to commercial common sense!

If you're going to compare Starship One, a better comparison would be to the rockets of the early 1950's - something which could lift a few pounds not quite into orbit - not the shuttle, which can carry 25 tons of anything all the way to high orbit - and back again.

Commercial "common sense" is about where NASA was 50 years, almost able to reliably launch satellites. In a few more years, they might be where NASA was 40 years ago, able to actually carry a man into space.

What a waste of resources....why not make it (crash) land on the moon and make it into an emergency astronaout lunar outpost. Or it will make a good satelite/probe in space.

Because it's not capable of reaching the moon.

Or it will make a good satelite/probe in space.

To do what? And with what power source?

Nah. You just need a good enough truck to make it down to Florida. On the way back, strap that puppy down tight to the flatbed and...voooooommmmm!

That's what the Soyuz is for. (Except vodka, not beer.)
